Cat Acting Strange
DEADLY_17
17-01-2012
She is 12 Years old and is a Turtle shell cat.

She has always been a hyper cat since she was a kitten but lately she has been acting rather odd. The past few weeks or so she has been running around everywhere, sounds normal but then she just cant stand still

She keeps jumping on the window where she knocks over the lamp and pictures, he was on the window today and i went to pick her up and her eyes were all black and she started to growl at me my sister tried and she did the same thing to her I thought she was turning into one of those cats from Pet Cemetery.

Then the other night she was just running around the whole house for a good hour or more.

Could it just be be her being hyper or can it be something else?

She does sleep alot though so maybe its just her being energetic, she eats healthy to.

My mums friends said shes loosing her mind she said she was joking but it has been playing on my mind since dont think i could hack loosing her she is part of the family

Has she been for a health check recently? She's a little older now and they can develop problems. She sounds like she was bit disorientated. Could she have had a seizure of some sort?

You could take her to get checked out just to be on the safe side, but to me it sounds like she s just having a bit of a mental hour!
My mums cat whose in his teens does things like this, he ll be all calm then have a complete mad half hour running around, he once ran & tried to climb straight up a glass door!
My 2 do the same thing, they will have days where they just seem to lose it & they ll fight & chase each other round the house then the next minute their sat curled up together !

My cat does that, we say she is chasing the ghosts. She can look quite possessed at times and I do feel sorry for our neighbour downstairs as she makes an awful racket when she is bounding around at quite a speed too, she also howls when she is doing it. But they spend a lot of time sleeping and need to use up their energy some how.

When I'm worried about one of my cats I take it to the vets, and that's what I suggest you do.

My cat Amy is nuts. She runs around the house each evening when my husband comes home from work!! I think the important thing with cats is to recognise when something unusual happens. If it is not "normal" behaviour. AND any cat owner knows that cats can be odd to the extreme!! If the odd behaviour continues take her to the vet. Mind you, I have been known to go to the vet, pay thirty pounds for various injections and be told that actually there is nothing wrong with her. BUT I think it is always better to be safe than sorry!!!!

It's a trip to the vet, I think.

However, have you treated her for fleas lately? Fleas can sometimes cause cats to behave strangely, leaping around, looking spooked, etc.

I think most cats probably have a time of day at which they go nuts - ours tears up and down the stairs, jumps on the furniture and yowls at everything. After a bit, he'll settle down again with an apologetic look on his face (sorry, went a bit weird there, sort of thing). He's never growled, though, he just gets excited.

I think you should take your cat to the vet. I am loathe to worry you, but the black eye / growling thing is exactly what happened to my Mum's cat - she was actually having seizures / fits. She was an old lady too.

Hopefully it is nothing of the kind, and its just her sprightliness, but you really should take her to be seen.

Our cat does this, and looks completely wild when she does it. In a split second she can leap on the sofa back from the ground, skimming my head as she goes. Like a missile! Then down again and running around the room like a loon.

But, I know this is normal (depending on how you look at it!) for her.

OP, if you've had your cat for several years, and this behaviour is unusual, then I would try flea treatment, and then the vets if it continues.
