Need help choosing between Samsung HT-D450 home cinema system and LG HB405SU
Hi, we have a choice out of these two home cinema systems, which one overall is the better one to choose. I know the LG has a blu ray player and the Samsung just has an upscaling dvd player. I doubt we would buy many blu rays but maybe would rent a few to try it out if we got that one. But just wanted to know overall which has the better spec as I haven't a clue. I don't want sugguestions on other home cinema systems just want to know if the Samsung or LG would be better. We will be connecting Sky+ hd box to it and maybe the wii.
Samsung: http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/t...tem/HT-D450/XU LG: http://www.lg.com/uk/tv-audio-video/...LG-HB405SU.jsp Thanks in adavance. |

As you have Sky + HD you must have a HD TV so it would make more sense to get the LG one with the BluRay player and make the most of your TV.
Quality wise I think these 2 makes are pretty much the same – decent kit but nothing astonishing. |

I would go for the LG as it's Blu-Ray and has DNLA so if you want to stream pictures, vids from a PC or network drive you can.
The Samsung does not have this ability. Edit just saw your post, you have an LG set then don't even bother with the Samsung. Just me but as much as possible I like to have all the same brand of kit. |

Yes we have an LG 42" plasma tv which is 720p would the blu ray make much of a difference on a 720p set?
Thanks for the quick reponse. As you have Sky + HD you must already know what HD is like? |

Depends on how close you sit to your TV and how good your eyes are but I did notice a difference with Bluray over DVDs – although it’s not as much as people sometimes make out I did find it very good.

Yes but wasn't sure blu ray would be the same or worse than the sky hd channels. Also I know I may sound thick but the LG is only 400 watts and the samsung is 850 watts, does that mean the samsung is louder?
In theory it means it can be louder but the manufacturer usually only shows the peak sound a unit can produce…at that level it would not sound good nor last very long. In normal usage bot would be plenty loud enough for a living room. |

Ok thanks very much for yours and MeanMints help, think I will go with the LG then. If anyone else has anything else to add please do.
Some do, some don't, those that don't usually only output 2 channel stereo. Would be a shame if you got the system home and connected it up and found you couldn't listen to Sky in 5.1. Apart from this, just make sure you have covered all inputs, now and for future use, do you want the TV connected to the system, will you be adding any other equipment in the future like Xbox, PS3- will the system cope. |

Ignore the power rating. It is a total work of fiction. If you read the specs of this sort of kit you'll find that the sum of the maximum power outputs of the individual speaker amps when driven one at a time is greater than the power they draw from the mains. So unless the Koreans have discovered a way to break one of the fundamental laws of physics or fit a petrol generator inside the unit there is no way you'll get the rated total power out of the thing. |

Even though both units feature optical input/s, I would personally check whether 5.1 is output from any external devices connected to the system i.e Sky HD.

How would I find that out?
I found this thread from owners of the system, only read the first two pages but it suggests 5.1 is possible from Sky HD. Have a read and see what you think - Could be a useful thread if you decide to buy it too. |

I generally do a search on Google or ring the manufacturer direct.
