I have the Humax FoxSat HDR, and was wondering whether it's possible to set it up so that it always shows the HD version of a channel. For example, if I type 101 I'd like it to show BBC One HD.

I didn't think this was likely, but the other day I was watching ITV - it was channel 103, but the picture had the little ITV1 HD logo at the top left.

Although it hasn't happened since!

My current telly is a SD CRT, but I've received my new HD TV today, so looking forward to watching some HD progs and just seems more natural to type 101 for Beeb 1, 103 for ITV etc.... but I'd like to watch the HD version.

You can't change the lcn's on the Freesat epg (Local Channel Numbers). I guess your logo was a screwup at ITV unless you have a postcode that the ITV-HD red button service still works on and you pressed the red button. You can watch the HD channels anyway with your SD TV (not in HD of course but the pictures should still be better than the SD equivalent).

Whilst BBC1 HD only broadcasts non-regional varieties, you will never get BBC1 HD on channel 101, because it would stop people from watching their local BBC channel by default.

In this day and age it is even more natural to use the Channel List or EPG to change channel. On the Channel List you can quickly get it show just the HD channels to choose from. On the EPG if you select the SD channel to watch or record it will offer the HD channel as an alternative.

I accept this is adapting your behaviour to fit in with the way the machine works rather than the other way round but sometimes it is easier to just go with the flow.

The one time I sometimes still key in a channel number is to switch it away from some live sport I am recording and want to watch from the start to avoid seeing or hearing a spoiler when I switch the TV on. But the TV/Radio button can be used for that too.

Which is exactly what I want. I have never watched the regional variety, in fact I have no channel 101.

BBC OneHD only broadcasts a red graphic overlaying one of the station idents during local news optouts. Some regional programming like Inside Out is broadcast but not necessarily the same region as on 101.- you might see the London edition as the national version even though it is not your home region.

NHK News HD originally had an SD version on the same channel number and the box detected which to select. That though stopped. The BBC Freeview channels broadcast a signal when the programme is simulcast in HD. Boxes that can detect it either put a pop-up message on screen (eg Humax and iCan) or autoswitch like the Technika IS,

On the Foxsat, you can always allocate the HD channels to their own 'Favorites' list to save zapping through the channel list to find them in the rather illogical places they are at the moment.

Possibly you were watching the news?
I have noticed that ITN tend to use sports coverage that was shown on ITV1 HD, complete with the DOG in the corner, even though the News is an SD programme.
Possibly it's considered a sneaky way of advertising that ITV1 HD is available.
