Dusty Springfield
Received "The magic of Dusty Springfield" for Christmas and am in love with her - I always knew I'd love her knowing the main singles and wish I'd investigated sooner....oh well better late than never.

Haha! Well I don't know many of her songs to be honest, although I do like Son of a Preacher Man. What are your favourite songs by her?

I'd rather listen to Dusty Springfield than Bieber.
It's amazing how influential she has been. Adele, Duffy, Amy Winehouse recently and before that Annie Lennox, Debbie Harry, Cher, Madonna... Dusty had a bit of the melancholy, a bit mysterious, a true artist....greatest female white singer of all time, probably. I guess you also might want to listen to Sandie Shaw, Petula Clark and Cilla Black who all also had their moments back then but never touched Dusty. |

fantastic artiste, id argue our best female, (although kate bush wins on creativity). the white woman of soul who loved black motown music and used her gifted voice to sing in a soulfull style.
goin back little by little i just dont know what to do with myself losing you superb. |

Love Dusty
She is timeless. I only really became a fan until last year. I much prefer her early stuff specifically her first five albums. She is such an Icon and a true British legend. I hope a resurge in her music comes into play in the near future. Without Dusty, no White Soul singer would be where they are today. We may praise Adele as today's biggest star and she rightly deserves it, but remember, if there was no Dusty, we would have no Adele. |

I know some of her biggest hits and absolutely LOVE her voice but can't say I own any of her albums
![]() Would a greatest hits/best of album be a good place to start? Or does anybody have any recommendations of actual albums?

i think the difference between dusty and adele and joss stone, is that dusty understands soul. not only was she blessed with a soulful voice (as indeed adele and joss are) , but she understood how to use it, to convey the emotion without resorting to melisma that a track requires.

Dusty In Memphis first. It's an album everyone that likes music should have in their record collection. It still sounds contemporary, even today.
Dusty in Memphis is the album. |

In the '60s she was Britain's white answer to black American female soul singers and was frequently compared to them. She was also the first female in Britain who had control over what she would record. In those days females in the music business did what they were told to by managers and producers, but Dusty was the exception. Her records have held up well and there's lots of her performing on Youtube.

i mostly prefer her early stuff, but I stumbled on her version of Quiet Please from 1979 and even though it ends up being a bit camp and cabaret, I would have loved to have been in the crowd

I'm old enough to remember The Springfields before she went solo. Her brother Tom was also in the band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf91ILhvHpo Frankly the cut off of her recording is 1974 or so - the unfinished 'Longings' tracks are available on Beautiful Soul - which completes her 60's career. I would avoid her 70's songs, unless you're into very middle of the road West Coast dinner party music. Although the much later Pet Shop Boys collaborations are good too. |

Party because the Springfields seemed pretty old hat once you had the Beatles and the Stones Also in her early solo career she seemed to do a lot of covers of Dionne Warwick type stuff which seemed a bit second-hand and Cilla Black-ish...........if you liked that music, which i did, you got Dionne Warwick's versions 'Preacher Man' was a great single though From later years i really love that record she did as the theme song for the Profumo Affair film - Scandal ? I think that was written by the Pet Shop Boys |
