Strange - if a dog likes its crate that's usually a safe place for life. On the other hand I have heard lots of stories of dogs hating their crates at first sight! My eldest dog doesn't do crates!!

Did anything happen that could possibly have upset him & made him make a bad association with the crate? Might have seemed nothing - a slip, a noise?

One of my dogs doesn't like to go into the kitchen anymore since I set alight a tray of popodoms

So I fed him in there - topping up his food with high value treats like cooked chicken & sausage - same as I did to get him used to his crate.

My best advice would be to chuck a bit of warm, juicy sausage in there & let him get it. Gradually, over a few days get him to associate the crate with sausage but chucking sausage in there at 20 minut4 intervals.

Two things beagles love - other dogs and food.

its really weird. he was really off for a week or so and then the last couple of nights he was fine and tonight he just suddenly started again. he goes in his crate during the day when we go out and he goes in without any problem, he gladly walks in there but it seems at night time he is disturbed by something. hes in the living room at the moment and looks so settled but we are worried if we leave him in here he will come to some harm. we dont know what to do for best.

Honestly, a four year old Beagle has almost grown up.

As long as your bin is secure (can you shut the kitchen door?) he should be OK. He is past the chewing stage. Just make sure there is nothing he could eat anywhere aqccessible. Like a toddler. No handbags, no shoes. No food, no medication. No headphones. Or knickers.

Worse he'll do is mess and even that is unlikely is house broken and having regular walks.

And he'll be soooooo happy in the morning - like he's all grown up now

Would you recommend one of us staying with him the first night? or leave him completely on his own? i know alot of dogs dont sleep in a crate but im just worried he will hurt himself on something whilst we arent there. is there anything we can do to make him more comfortable?

Just curious, what harm do you think he would come to in the living room?

Maybe falling off the sofa or the window ledge where he sometimes lays? im also worried if we leave him he'll wonder why hes been left on his own.

Leave him be - he'll be fine.

Fast asleep on your sofa

If you can't sleep for worry, sleep downstairs - but for your own sake don't make a habit of it. He'll be fine.

And with good quality sausage, he'll probably be back in his crate by the end of the week anyway.

do you think for the first night out of his crate that one of us should sleep with him??

CB is a bit of a worrier and she loves the dog like nothing else. You and I know that dog will be OK, CB needs a bit of reassurance.

Hope you don't mind me saying that CB

I think he'll be fine.

I think you will be happier if you or Mr CB sleeps with him.

No worries, just wondered what sort of danger was in the living room lol.

Im sure he will be fine, if he wakes up through the night he will probably be glad he has a nice comfy seat on the sofa and wont even notice no-one else is there. Just give him a bit of freedom x

If you are that worried about your dog being alone, why not just let him sleep in his own bed in your bedroom on a night?

hi there. well i kept him out of his crate last night as he seemed pretty settled in the living room & i stayed with him so he wasnt too worried, hoping that would help but he didnt get a great deal of sleep and neither did i, but we have realized what could be the problem? we stopped giving him one of his favourite foods about a week ago(which is when the problems started) as he wasnt having very good poos with that food, but we have realized that since we stopped giving him it he has been completely unsettled and restless. we gave him some tonight and he seemed so happy.... whos to know how its gonna go at bedtime though.
