Hi,

My mate has got a PlayStation2 which can play DVDs of region-2 only, is there any way of making PS2 region-free?

Cheers,
Mark

Yes, you need something called REGION X. It's designed for the PS2.
To be honest l've only seen this for sale in magazines and seen it mentioned in these forums, but as l understand it, you put the region x disc in, before you want to play a DVD it then loads the software needed. Then you play whatever region you want.

Have to fair Mark and say this problem seems to be "rare" . Most of the reports on Region X are good . It'll also remove that annoying green screen if you're using a RGB SCART .
One thing , you're TV needs to be NTSC compatible . If you're not sure then contact the maker . Most modern European TVs are .
This is not your only option . You can also install a multiregion DVD modchip . Granted , this method is a little bit more complicated and it'll invalidate your waranty but it's an option .

I've got the region-x for the ps2 and it works fine if you follow the correct instructions...... if you don't then you get the disc read error mentioned in thread mentioned above.

Note that in order for you to be able to use the region X your tv must have an RGB scart input on your tv, not just the bog standard composite scart socket or it must be totally ntsc compatible. If its not then you'll end up with either a black and white picture or no picture at all.

"The Register" recently reported that Sony have managed to obtain court injunctions which prevent the sale of these modchips.Don't know whether this is still in force.

Apparently you can buy an 'adapter' thing from HMV for £25 that makes PS2 multi region.

Is there anything that can make a DVD player other than PS2 Region free? I have a Philips DVD 622 if that means anything to anyone. Would be very grateful as there are some American DVD's I've seen on Amazon.com not available for UK.
