Which one to go for?
Iam going on for 50 yrs old & am looking for my first smartphone. Would love an I phone but cannot justify the expense. My first choice so far is the Samsung S5830 galaxy ace £15 pm tesco mobile - looks quite good to me - the alternatives are Blackberry 8520 curve, Samsung S5570 galaxy mini grey or HTC wildfire S. They are all £15 pm - the blackberry is giving 750 minutes - the others all 250 mins. I mainly want it for surfing alongside my laptop & using skype. Also is 500mb of data going to be enough for a months worth of surfing? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Considering you mention iPhone is expensive means you are on a budget. So far, the common denominator between the handsets you've pointed are, they're using single-core 1GHz CPU (even less), mediocre specs, has internet browsing capability.
If you don't need a keyboard, I say you get a Samsung Nexus S, prices are pretty cheap on Vodafone or Orange (http://mobiledeals.cnet.co.uk/phones/google/nexus-s/). Has decent specs, supports the latest Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), front-facing camera for Skype and will definitely work on your laptop for data transferring. |

The Galaxy Ace will suit you as an introduction into the Smartphone world. Not too techy to frighten the uninitiated but enough to make you wonder how you did before you had it.
Get as short a contract as possible, because, you will want something more for your second phone..

id be tempted to the wildfire S ..... HTC make great starter phones and keep things simple. The Ace has very limited space for app installations i believe .....
Either phone will do you fine though

If you just want it for browsing and skype then you dont need anything 'top of the range'. 500mb is about the minimum you should go for. install something like 'Stats Free' to monitor your 3G usage ....
For your usage id look at the size and resolution of the screen being the most important points ! its certainly the key thing for web browsing. My wife has a Sony Xperia Arc S and pays about 25 quid a month. Thats a great phone if you can find it on a better deal. |
