Couldn't agree more.

In particular, it's a good point that sometimes a bad episode is just a bad episode - and a lot of people also loved it, let's not forget - and no more than that.

Even the best of shows have had one or two duff episodes in a season. Yes, I know it matters more to us as viewers when you only have three-episode seasons, but that's just the way the series is structured.

A single data point is only suggestive of a trend rather than anywhere close to conclusive. Conversely, the BBC would point to the ratings for episodes 1 and 2 and ask, "What's the problem if more people are watching it?" which, ultimately, is the point of putting on a prime time show on BBC1. Everyone wants quality, but if you think quality is all-important and popularity is something to be sneered at, that's what BBC4 (which shows some brilliant stuff) is for.

I assumed Mary had been to reception to ask and that's why she was a bit behind them and saying it as she came up the stairs
That's what I assumed too, but it's interesting reading folk's theories that there's something about Mary, because on reflection, Watson definitely told Mary to "stay here" as soon as Sherlock told him who was in trouble at the wedding reception. She ignored that pretty much straight away.

I don't recall seeing any wedding vows being shown in the episode, and I know the whole love, honour and obey thing is a bit old hat and contentious now, but if something was shown, in a very small way, her refusal to follow instructions is an example of a vow being broken, and it is the 'last' vow in that phrase too.

Do you know many women who just meekly do as they are told by their husbands, then?

No, good point, well made.

I'm married, so I can't think of a single one.

...as long as you both shall live.

and I don't think they'll be killing off Watson, so...

My head's in a spin with all the signals that people are seeing. In providing so many visual clues (real clues, red-herrings, not clues at all but "seen" by some viwers as clues, etc) its probably nearly impossible to see the wood for the trees.

Just caught up with it last night, and on reflection I thought it was a fantastic episode. For a long, long time I was thinking 'Where the Hell is all this going? It's just one stand-alone scene after another', but in the last fifteen minutes or so, it all came together and made some sort of sense, which for me is exactly the way a great 'whodunnit' should be. It wasn't perfect - portraying S's chatroom conversations with the Mayfly women in 'real-life' just didn't work for me (note to Moffat & Gattis: people whose big 'secret' is that they work for a reclusive ex-soldier and had to sign the OSA tend not to give away the fact that they have a big secret ), but the parts of the speech where S actually spoke about J and/ or M were wonderfully written and delivered, with some very funny lines that you had to be concentrating on to catch (such as S saying that if he appears to be extremely smart, it's only because of the stark contrast provided by John ! ).

I don't tend to over-analyse, so as 'sub-text' goes this is extremely obvious, but does anyone think the pre-credits sequence - where Lestrade was desperately, defiantly going after that criminal family - has any future relevance, or was it just an elaborate set-up to show how a) Lestrade will drop everything for S, and b) to show how desperate S was in trying to write the speech?

I'm married with numerous kids and I can't think of one either. I am waiting to see what revelations there are about Mary. There is definitely something about her we have to find out.

The last vow is usually "till death do us part" which would indicate the final episode would be about the death of one of the couple presumably Mary, but in this episode it was sherlock who made his first and final vow and that was to protect all three , John Mary and the baby so I'm thinking they all might survive
Mary running after John and sherlock just shows again she isn't a damsel in distress that she is a fighter too
I do believe she has a secret and that she is being blackmailed though

I really enjoyed the episode. At first I was a bit distracted and it was a bit tricky to follow the story it's only on second viewing I was totally able to grasp the whole plot, on the third viewing I'm looking for clues, that's why I like sherlock there is no other programme that I would want to watch three times
I loved the humour and sherlock eccentricity I loved the court room in sherlocks head, I thought drunk sherlock was brilliant , I know there was a lot of coincidences and a little bit unbelievable murder attempt but all in all it's fiction and I thought it was clever and came together well
