What splendid television. A joy to watch. And it seems redundant to say by now but how wonderful Cumberbatch and Freeman are. Bravo!

The answer is obvious. But I liked the way the fan's idea had a resolute "Bollocks" from Lestrade.

That was bloody fantastic.

Well, I loved this. The alternative explanations twist was a delight, plus the addition of Amanda Abbington (Martin Freeman's real-life partner) and Benedict Cumberbatch's parents. Best of all, though, was the fact we got a proper examination of how Sherlock's death (and return) affected Watson - rather than in the books, where he faints and then he's suddenly okay with it.

Welcome back, Sherlock.

I don't know if you have seen this but Simon Pegg spills the truth about Benedict Cumberbatch. Starts about 3 minutes in. The last line is funny.

Personally, I loved this (and I *have* already seen the whole episode). It's all about the relationship between Sherlock and John and how the latter deals with his friend returning from the dead.

In the books, Watson faints and then he's basically as if it never happened. This was far more satisfactory - great performances by Cumberbatch and Freeman too.”

I prefer a decent story not mawkish sh**e as they're waiting to be blown up (and then the lamest of lame resolutions: the off-switch on the bomb).

What's the fact it's fiction got to do with it?

He's merely asking when we'll know the actual resolution to a mystery will be revealed which was created by the writer of this particular piece of fiction.

Series 3 nemesis Charles Augustus Magnussen - played by The Killing’s Lars Mikkelsen - made a surprise appearance in The Empty Hearse

Which was another fandom theory iirc.

I love the interaction Mofffat and Co. have with the fans.

I love how Anderson and his little group embodied the fans . Very funny.

Overall, I loved it! Glad it's back.

Damn you Moffat and Gatiss for not making it absolutely clear how Sherlock faked his death! ”

I concur. Big hopes for the next 2 now that Sherlock is back. I can't deny that I will be very annoyed if it is not made clear how Sherlock faked his death though, seems a bit of a cop out if they don't.

Patience. It's a throwback to the original books.

I would love to hear you give an example of what you consider good TV...

that was brilliant!!!! i loved every second of it. quite emotional and moving in parts too. sherlock for all his bravado loves john, i loved him throwing his parents out as soon as john came in lol i need to rewatch that ep tho so much happened!

and that bit at the end...whoever was watching that was obviously gaging sherlocks reaction to john being in danger...so wonder what will come of that?

When he whispers it into John's ear on their wedding night.

Except, of course, that will never happen outside of dirty, kinky fanfition...so no, we will never find out how he did it.

Probably for the best. Ambiguity is the most satisfying conclusion we could hope for to the mystery, I think.

Series 1 of 'Sherlock' was great as was some of series 2. This new episode was crap. As others have said, nothing but 'style over substance'.

I genuinely don't have any spoilers but I think I know where this season will end and that last bit was key.

Like a magic trick the answer to Sherlocks death would only disappoint.

So glad that's a bit ambiguous.

Wasn't keen on the whole show being about the relationship but would understand people disagreeing.

The crime hmmm...bit of luck the train guy going to Sherlock with that film.

I'd naively thought the whole of the underground was run on a computer system so the idea of carting off a carriage didn't quite wash.

Not one of the best episodes for me.

NB Sebastian Moran was Moriartys right hand man and Holmes had to deal with him as his first adventure back from the dead so I assume that's Moran we are seeing.

Kim Newman wrote a brilliant set of stories called The Hound of The Durbervilles which details Moriarty and Morans adventures up to the final fatal meeting with Holmes.
