Portable devices - music management
Spent 20 mins doing a search and couldn't find a specific answer to this, so here goes.
Which is the best music management software I could use with my iRiver HP120. I have a PC running Win98se & laptop with Win XP and would like software to run on both. The manual suggests Winamp though I suspect people will recommend iTunes. Will iTunes integrate with the iRiver? Also what about MusicMatch and dbPoweramp - are they options? Views on these and any other suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks StereRowe |

Presumably you're needing the following functions:
1. Ripping - iTunes is very good if a little slow, the start/end track feature very useful for ripping partial tracks (eg. dealing with long final hidden CD tracks with hidden songs). Depends what formats you want/need though. 2. Sorting through and naming mp3s (iTunes very good for this also). 3. Transfering to your player (even without direct iTunes support, if your player uploads from a directory you can always sync your player with the contents of your iTunes etc directory if you want to choose different music management and mp3 player transfer software). Your best bet is to try various free downloads in addition to the software that comes with your mp3 player and see what works best, and whether one package does everything. |

I find iTunes lacking; there simply aren't sufficient means to configure the media library management, especially if the library resides in multiple locations on the network. Others do a much better job here; I use Winamp for ripping, library management and playing. There is an AAC plug-in for it so that I can still buy stuff from the iTunes store.

I have an iRiver iHP also, and as a long-time Musicmatch user find that ripping to MP3 in Jukebox and then transferring the files across via Windows is the simplest method. The WinAmp thing in the manual refers to playlist creation, as they say the iHP's can read .M3U files created by WinAmp only. I haven't tried making a playlist myself as I tend to just have shuffle all on

Thanks for the answers.
Another question if I may. Why isn't my iHP120 recognised by Windows Media player 9 on my Win 98se PC? It isn't listed in 'portable devices' and attempting, Tools-Options-Devices -add, just takes me to the supported devices web page. Do I need this & WMP 10? Apart from that I have no problems. Im able to drag & drop files using Windows Explorer etc Thanks StereRowe Last edited by StereRowe : 26-10-2004 at 22:00. Reason: Added link |

I've searched for plug-ins - anyone suggest one/do I need one? Many thanks StereRowe |
