Please note that this is NOT intended to be a "what impression do you get of this picture" thread!!!!

http://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=53.6070...,203.21,,0,5.6 Possibly the worse ever one I have ever had the displeasure to set foot in. I went in to have a look inside yesterday (I would have taken some pictures to show how bad it really looked inside, but I forgot my camera) and it felt like I had stepped back in time 12 years! The wretched building doesn't even have any fire exits at the side that can be seen outside, and when I went inside, there was so much stuff, making the aisles so narrow it would have been a nightmare to escape from in a fire and no fire exits apart from the entrance could be seen. And you can see from the imagery that there is an entrance and exit on the corner of the building, but the exit has been blocked by some of the stock and the entrance is now a combined entrance and exit. Also inside, the carpeting looked ancient and there was no air conditioning whatsoever making the place seem like an oven even with my coat off. Next time I go in (which will be the last ever time just to get some pictures of the inside of the place) I will get some pictures of the inside of the place, and you will get an impression of just how ancient inside it really is! Have you ever seen a worse looking Poundstretcher store anywhere?

It looks bad enough from the outside and it looks like a run down factory shed on an industrial estate rather than being a proper shop. There's a Poundland in my local shopping centre but that's properly lit and stocked and it's fine as a store.

And on top of all that it's in Scunthorpe.

Its really sad when businesses let their premises run down like this, and its not only Poundstretcher that does it either.

Is it as mouldy on the inside as it is on the outside?

Holy shit, that's a genuine Pounstretcher? It looks like a sardine cannery, circa 1971.

That is because it was a factory (can't remember exactly what factory it was) and was converted into a Poundstretcher.

Yes it is as mouldy on the inside as it is on the outside! In fact, someone I know who had been in there before said they would never shop there again after they picked up something off one of the shelves and it disturbed a group of spiders!

So why is it still open & trading if it's a shitehole ?

I don't know exactly why. Put it this way though, if Poundstretcher was no longer using that building, and I moved my business into there, the first thing I would do is have the yellow colour on the outside painted over in some variant of blue or maybe a cream colour. Then I would give the inside a complete overhaul even if it took weeks and weeks.

The only slightly good thing that has changed about that Poundstretcher store is that they have replaced the signage you can see with signage that has the most up to date Poundstretcher logo on it!

And just think if on JSA you might even have NO choice in whether you are forced to work in what could potentially be this store - http://graduatefog.co.uk/2012/1786/g...nd-internship/

I'm sure most Poundstretcher stores have had a complete refit now. That one clearly got missed!

Edit - I was wrong about the company.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if there was an "unexplained fire" there in the not so distant future.

{EDIT: The one in the OPs post, I mean}

I love Poundstretcher. It's my personal mission to get just one of their staff to say hello, thank you or goodbye. I've been at it for 8 years now and I know one day it will happen.

Suits the clientele that frequent these places.

Sports shop in Edinburgh was the same - golf clubs and bags propped up against stairways - not even secured. Impossible to walk in a straight line from the back of the shop to the front - you had to walk sideways the aisles were so narrow. A quick phone call to the local council health & safety people and the local fire brigade saw action taken within 24 hours - they were threatened with a closure notice if they didn't improve things.

Lasted about 3 months then got bad again. This time, they were served a formal warning and doors were shut again as their public liability insurance would have been voided because of them obstructing fire regs.

Fire Officer also noticed that there was only one extinguisher in the whole shop when there should have been at least 10.

Never be frightened to report these shops - many years ago many people were killed in a Woolworths fire (Manchester I think) simply because fire regs were not observed.

Absolutey the right thing to do. Have done it myself a few times, for both shops I've visited and offices I've worked in.

Actually, I shouldn't laugh, because these are the shops directly opposite my flat:
