Digitizing our Media
My partner and myself moved into a Bungalow last May and we've found adjusting to a smaller house quite challenging. I've been trying to think of ways to free up space and I'm thinking of trying to digitize all of our CDs/DVDs (which can then be put into storage - aside from the odd disc my partner might want to keep out for display
I've been doing some googling and I've found a Boxee, which in essence sounds like the kind of thing we would need in order to play the files (I do love the design but is there anything cheaper?). Also it seemed we would need some external hard drives on which to store the media. My boyfriend's PC is slow, and my MBP travels with me a lot so I don't like the idea of storing the data on our computers. Has anyone done something similar? Would it be an absolute nightmare for the sake of getting rid of three bookshelves full of DVDs/CDs? Also I'm big on itunes, I'm presuming all our purchases wouldn't be able to be stored with the other files? One more thing, how large do you think each DVD rip would need to be to retain the quality for playback but be small enough to store? (I'm wondering what size external HD we'd need). Thanks in advance!

If you want a simpler means of cutting down the size then something like Discgear makes a massive difference in space required.

So far I've transferred around 200 2hr discs onto a WD1.5TB hard drive (so far about half full) and play them back via usb link through an Asus O!Play HDP-R1 media player connected to my full hd tv by HDMI cable. Picture is excellent. It'll play mp3 files (windows media player can transfer your cds as mp3 files), youtube videos of which I've downloaded hundreds, photos and just about anything else you throw at it. Transferring the dvds is simply a case of putting the dvd into your pc drive and dragging the VIDEO_TS folder across to your usb connected external hard drive. As for doing the same with commercial dvds, you're not supposed to be able to do this. If you try you'll get an error message. You'll need special software which allows you to circumvent the disc's copyright protection. And I think the transfer would take place in real time as it's re-encoded (can someone enlighten us?) I'm not familiar with the Boxee but whichever media player/streamer you go for do your home work as they don't all support full dvd menus, i.e. all you'll see is a list of files that you click on to play. The Asus does have full menu support which is one of the reasons I chose it over others. |
