When we got our pup she was pure black .
Only black one in the litter, rest black and tan.
Both parents were black and tan, Both grandmas were black and tan and the one grandad we saw was black and tan.

When I say black I mean jet black not really dark brown. Both her top coat and under coat the same colour.

She is now coming up to 10 months old and the fur between her toes and the fur half way up her front legs at the back has changed colour to a tan colour. The rest is still as black as the ace of spades.

Does anyone here know about there colourings and if this is normal. Is more of her likely to change colour or will that be it now?
Cant seem to find anything on the net about it apart from they don't usually change colour?

Strange, I was reading about german shepherds and their colouring on another forum yesterday

From what I can remember, black and tans, start off dark but get progressively lighter the the sables start lighter and get darker......I think. Don't quote me on it.

I know this can happen with other dogs as they loose the puppy coat and the full adult coat comes in - indeed it is common for a slight varience. If you look at photos of my Chinese Crested girl all her markings are different from when she was a pup - her 'mahogany' thst was half her head, on her tail and socks, has dissapeared with just brown tips to her ears. My other CC went from a self coloured nose to bi-coloured (sooo annoying as that is a major fault when showing!!). Even my Glenn went from grey to the proper blue of the adult - though that was expected and not as extreme as you are talking about!!

Not heard of it in GS - but my SIL is the GS expert not me!! I can ask her if it's bothring you?

Its not overly bothering me and she was registered on her pedigree as black and tan so expected she may get a little tan , But her fur on back of her legs seemed to thin out quite a bit ( vet suspected allergy to chicken ) and has now grown back properly but is tan. It's not a large amount of colouring and only noticed it because when looking at a picture i took the other day. But she does have several other thin areas and wondered if these would come back tan to.
Very strange as vet thought she would stay black.

This was the thread on another forum I was reading yesterday and goes into things in more details. It initially talks of the colour sable but keep reading and it has information about the colour change for blacks and tans.

My 14 month old girl was nearly all black when we got her at 10 weeks. She now has lots of silver in her face and her chest is slightly silver. Her legs are more tan than they were too. She is still just as gorgeous

Don't know much about GSDs but if Chows are anything to go by it is quite normal to get some lighter 'shading' on the back legs, usually silver in Chows but tan woulod make sense in a GSD, specially if the parents and grandparents were black and tan. It happens in black Chows who have shaded red parents or grandparents. Most of her will stay black. Also bear in mind that black dogs tent to go 'rusty' if they sunbathe.
