Vinyl albums could be made into plant-pot holders but CDs take a little more imagination to find something useful to make of them. In the past I've:

Hung them in the apple trees to scare birds away

Microwaved them (great pyrotechnics)

Any other suggestions?

Hand them in to your local commercial radio station for their playlist?

Well, I try not to buy crap CD's. But even my impeccable judgment fails me sometimes! To be honest, I hate throwing things out that i've paid for, so they tend to collect dust on a shelf somewhere.

...and hanging CD's from anything is soooo last century. Did that make me sound in fashion? No? Oh well, i'll go back to my Kinks CDs.

Being the Martha Stewart that i am (not! but we share the same birthday and knit sweaters), I suggest you paint them and turn them into "funky" futureristic costers.

Sell them on ebay (someone's bound to want them, if only for a pound!) or stick them shiny side up to the wall for modern art!

Your local charity shop will be glad to have them. Somebody will buy them, if only for 10p.

In Canada, there was a stall at the big festival and this man converted old vinyl records (unplayable) into clocks and fruit bowls. I got myself a lovely Pink Floyd vinyl clock and was tempted to get a Village People fruit bowl.

Old CDs and Tapes that I will never listen to are generally given to charity where some old dear will pay 50p for it.

Make christmas decorations out of them or use them to make a robot fancy dress costume?

Bit like after 10 pints of Guinness?

Sorry, there was no need for that!

Charity shops are always a good idea, it does feel like you're helping someone. And if you've got the time to look you can uncover some treasures - one persons junk is just what somebody else has been looking for.

you smash them up, then piece them together like a puzzle, stick, this on the wall and use it as a talking point to annoy your 'friends' who believe themselves to be music experts.

eg annoying friend 'what's that smashed cd on your wall?'

me 'blond on blond/Sgt Pepper/Definitely Maybe/'

then watch them get really cross!!!

My daughter works for Battersea Dogs Home and I give all the freebie discs to her, as they turn them into mobiles for the kittens and young cats to play with.
