In Currys I was looking at the digital cameras when a member of staff came over and asked me what contract I was on. I told him PAYG and with Orange. He then asked what I was paying - £5 per month I replied. Then he became excited and said that there is a 'top secret deal' going on that I would be a fool to miss. He could not show me it in writing as 'the deals are changing so fast' but I gathered that I would get:

Free smartphone (one on offer was 'imported from the USA')
£10.50 per month fee
Loads of free texts/internet
Up to £350 off (1/2 price) technology in store like a TV.

He said that people had been lining up for it - yet the store was empty.

So, what was this deal - something must cost money somewhere? Too good to be true springs to mind.

Free smartphone (one on offer was 'imported from the USA') - Grey import with limited aftersales support
£10.50 per month fee - Twice what you are paying!
Loads of free texts/internet - Rather non commital
Up to £350 off (1/2 price) technology in store like a TV. - on a limited slection of items that they are unable to sell

He said that people had been lining up for it - yet the store was empty.
How can people line up if they don't know an offer is available.

I smell bullshit from a bullshit salesman. Leave well alone

Cor they do talk out of their arses don't they!

The definitive way to prove a salesperson is lying is by noting when their lips move!

Never speak to a salesperson unless you want advice, if a phone salesmen approaches you - tell them you are browsing cameras, not mobile phones - then ask them the differences between a compact DSLR and a regular Digital camera, he will soon head back to his mobile concession.

Thanks. Having worked in the electronics trade for a while I am wary of 'promotions' but this one was presented in a style that would fool quite a few people into signing up I think. One assistant calls over his 'mate' to substantiate the fact that the deal is the best ever. Such tactics reminded me why I don't go in there much any more - like the previous visit to pick up a HD camcorder.

Sales geezer: May I help you?
Me: What is the difference between the Pansaonic SD90 and SD900 - the labels are not clear?
Sales geezer: They are the same but one label is mis-printed with an extra '0'.
Me: Well the Panasonic leaflet here shows both in the £50 promotion.
Sales geezer: Oh yes...
Me: Thanks, bye...

Never trust a single word any salesperson says in these shops. They tend to have less intelligence than the PCs they try to sell.
