The Ratings Thread (Part 31)
Quote:
Generally in this thread, and in the whole of DS forums, negativity is focussed on more than positives.
I predict during the Olympics there will be half a dozen posts mentioning the high rating for the 100m and then 3 pages debating whether Coronation Street is in crisis because it rated low against it! ![]() |

Anyone know how the Pointless/The Chase ratings are recently, I don't think they've been reported for a while.

The ratings discussion has seriously outgrown this one main thread. This thread in all its parts has way more posts than some whole forums - it really needs a sub-forum and I'm not the first to suggest this! Please, mods?

As well as this, I'd like to know how Countdown's rating with Hewer as host? I've always thought it's on an hour too early - it should be on at 4.15pm as it was from 2001-03.

Indeed it should, but they would never bump Deal or No Deal to the earlier slot, however ridiculous the show is these days.

Agreed. The popularity of this thread means that a sub-forum should be a consideration. Plus, there's so much discussion as well so maybe a sub-forum wouldn't be a bad idea. But 30 parts to a thread in around 5 years

Having our own sub-forum would be immense and would make searching through past data easier if we had a new thread for each day, but somehow I don't think the mods would go for it. Even with all the views and comments this thread has I bet they see it as too niche a subject to have its own dedicated section of the forum.

Lots of great rating talk and we can't quote anything from the last thread. Can they at least copy the last page of comments over to the new thread.

I'd vote for a sub forum too. This is without a doubt my favourite thread on DS. So much interesting discussion and data and this could grow with a sub forum for ratings.

I work for a living, I never post weekdays before teatime, by which point the ratings have generally been discussed in great detail and the discussion has moved on.
Apart from any days that ITV get big ratings and any days BBC get low ratings. There was plenty of discussion about TRB the last two Tuesdays but you still had your dig. Im sure your pleased BBC1 had a great night anyway.

So Channel 5 are running trails for tonight's much anticipated episode of Celebrity Big Brother.
What does it show? Clips from the spelling bee task! ![]() I can only assume this promo was put together before it all kicked off last night as that's the only logical reason I can think of. Missed opportunity though from a ratings point-of-view as now the casual audience will have no idea what's coming. |

at the CTM rating. Never expected it to grow so much. 8.6m is a massive result for BBC1 and ITV must be worried about the DoI ratings which are very poor. ITV looks like its finally losing grip on its Sunday nights. They should have split it up over the weekend. Major, major mistake this year. It's probably going to settle at around 7m now for its run which would make it, its worst rated series ever! Next year some BIG changes will have to be made as those figures are totally unacceptable for this show.

FPT: "Sky claiming yesterday's match between Arsenal and Manchester United was the highest rated Super Sunday match ever.
Averaged 3.2m, peaked at 3.55m" A shame that the extra long outro is going to wreck the programme average. Programme was 3.30pm to 7pm rather than the usual 3.30pm to 6.30pm. So the match, even including half-time, was only 50% of the programme. So I suspect likely to be a programme average of only approx 2.2m. |

Did Ch4 even advertise BB much? I can't really remember if they did.Whilst I still think tonight will be boosted, a shock for the audience will in fact boost it in the long term to the finale - we all know its not the same 2 million watching every night, but probably at least a reach of 4 million watching rather reguarly - so keeping bums on seats is more neccessary than pulling them in. Surprising the audience means they never know what to expect. Better in the long term, and makes it all seem more natural and less put on (which killed the Ch4 show). No idea if thats their thought process ofc. |

The Dancing on Ice figures show how vulnerable ITV1's schedule can potentially be. Obviously when their 4 big reality shows are at the top of their game, it can be very rewarding. But with DOI being down about -15% y-o-y, BBC1 has come through to win Q1 Sundays with its fresher lineup. What happens if I'm a Celebrity this Autumn suddenly dips -15% or TXF and BGT continue their ratings declines? ITV1 would be in a bad position as they'd have ageing, declining formats which take up a lot of hours of the schedule but hardly any new big shows coming through either. Also, what if The Voice takes off on BBC1? That would mean in the space of a year, BBC One would've made huge gains in their previously difficult Q1 Sunday and Q2 Saturday periods.
I disagree with the idea that Dancing on Ice should be axed. It's undoubtedly past its prime and on a general downward slope but it would be naiive to axe a 7m rater in the current environment with no obvious replacements waiting in the wings because it would probably take the channel at least 5-10 attempts (based on past record) to find a new replacement show to get those kind of ratings for 30 hours of the year. BUT I think DOI needs to be scaled back next year on Sundays so that there's room for other programmes to come through. Apart from Q3 Sundays, Q1 Sundays are probably the most watched nights of the year in terms of total TV viewers and the best timeslots to launch new series. At the moment that's not possible due to the DOI/WAH strangehold but next year there has to be changes to that schedule. Channels have to recognize when it's the right time to scale back something which used to be popular to give other fresher programmes the best slot to prosper and it's probably time to do that with DOI. With 40 more hours of drama next year, ITV1 has to start using Q1 Sundays as a launch pad for some of those new shows, rather than keeping DOI/WAH on Sundays and having to air some of those dramas in lesser-watched Q2/Q3 Weds/Thurs slots simply because the Sunday slots weren't available. From BBC One's perspective on weekends, they now seem to generally dominate Q1 Saturdays, Q1 Sundays, Q2 Sundays, Q3 Saturdays, Q3 Sundays. There's only Q2 Saturdays, Q4 Saturdays and Q4 Sundays which they lose in. But if The Voice can take off, Q2 Saturdays can be sorted for the long term. And in terms of Q4, they made good ground up last year due to Merlin's increased popularity and the decline of TXF. I think if they're a little more aggressive, they could make up a little more ground there. Someone a few days ago joked that New Tricks should air on Q4 Sundays, but I'm saying why not? Yes, it might fall from 8.5m to 7.5m but it would probably help BBC One win Q4 Sundays too which would be yet another weekend quarter victory ticked off. BBC One have been making good progress in weekend primetime over the last few years, it's got to be said. |
