that 7.30 slot on a saturday is a killer for ABC1, with one episode of Doc Martin getting 1.46m last November. And Doctor Who before it ranging from 513k to 792k, which though not excellent, on some weeks was the highest rating non-news programme

But if you include DW on the BBC list, you should also include Merlin. With zero to none hype and against TXF it has reached the level of 7-8m, and it's an even bigger international success.

I strongly disagree on its quality. Admittedly its been several months since I watched it but I thought it was a fantastic piece of television and beautifully shot. It doesn't hurt that Jason Isaacs is excellent in it either. Sadly I don't share your optimism for its chances of finding an audience. Its a shame though because it really does deserve an audience. My hope is that NBC will stick with it for the critical love and the awards recognition. At this stage Isaacs' at least should be locked for an Emmy nod.


Terrible decision if true but worth mentioning that as far as I can see The Wrap is the only place that have covered any aspect of this story which is a little odd. I'd imagine it would have filtered through to other sites by now if locked in to the extent they're suggesting. Also worth remembering that an almost identical story to this did the rounds during the first season of The Voice and we all know how that ultimately turned out. I'd take it with a grain of salt for now.

It's worth noting the great demos Graham Norton is doing for Ten on Saturday's since they poached him from the ABC.

Number 1 in all the demos a fortnight ago and this week Number 1 in 18-39 and just behind the news shows in the other two.


The big difference being all the money made from Merlin's international sales, dvds and toys etc goes to Shine/News Corporation, while the BBC own DW.
So DW is a show and brand of far more importance to them.

On the NBC front...

They absolutely have to look at what other broadcasters are doing - they'd be nuts, for example, to air The Office against Modern Family on Wednesday @ 9.

I'm not suggesting they throw things onto the schedule completely at random but with a couple of exceptions I think they just have to completely ignore what the opposition is doing. They cannot afford to start trying to second guess where ABC, CBS and Fox are going to schedule all but their biggest hits (Modern Family, American Idol/X Factor, Big Bang Theory).

Although to be completely honest I'm not sure it would be madness to air The Office against Modern Family at this point and certainly no more damaging than a clash with Big Bang Theory (which looks increasingly likely). Not that NBC's priority should be on protecting The Office at this stage anyway. Its dead and nothing they do is going to be able to reverse that.

As I said before there's really nowhere NBC can schedule at this point where they aren't going to be going against much bigger shows. They cannot afford to worry about that. They have to be aggressive and pro-active with their scheduling there is no such thing as a 'soft slot' for anything on broadcast any more or television as a whole for that matter so you try your best to avoid the biggest hitters when you can and that's about it. But even then they can't just roll over and die in the face of these big shows. People put far too much emphasis on show x airs in this slot so they can't air show y.

I'll also point out that despite American Idol and Modern Family both airing in the 9PM hour on Wednesday night the majority of 18-49 year olds that were watching television weren't watching broadcast last night and a huge number of them weren't even watching television. There are mammoth audiences that aren't watching Modern Family or Big Bang Theory or American Idol and it should be that audience that NBC is primarily shooting for.

And New Tricks nowhere to be seen in demos (not a total surprise).

I'm really surprised by how well Norton does in Australia, most of the guests are promoting something that maybe on British TV or cinemas, or in the charts, yet TV and movies either don't get released or are further down the line here, and most music that is released in Aus is around a while before Britian gets it. The last 3 UK number 1s were big hits here 6 months ago, even Jessie J who is British.

I notice Jonathan Ross is on ABC this saturday, starting at 9.30 following Norton on TEN, would be interesting to see how well he does.

Basically, it opens the key 9pm slot for new content every night and allows them to focus on those slots.

But keep it simple. If they want the next Heroes or Lost or 24 remember that they all had a really mainstream selling point. So far they've got pilots set in worlds with no energy, 10 minutes in the future with families of mechanical humans... I might be wrong to write them off. They might have wonderful scripts. But will they be marketable? No.

It's not perfect, there are flaws. But the big problem with NBC is that they're basically starting with nothing so there will be glaring weaknesses whatever schedule they settle on.

After the success of Mrs Brown, Channel 4 are giving a pilot to another sucessful Irish comedy act- The Rubberbandits after a successful online debut.

Yeah it really surprised me as 'Rove' Ten's homegrown chatshow used to only get around 700-800k in his last few years though it was on a tougher night.

NBC is a mess, no hit shows, bad demos and no improvement in sight. Surprised they are still on air.

So back to the UK EE continues to lurch from bad to worse with another switch off episode, my prediction for the head to head is,

EastEnders 4.1 million.

Emmerdale 7.8 million.


I even expect The One Show to have bettered EE with an rating of 4.6 million, now that would be an upset if it has happened.

Is Neighbors due for an eviction from Eleven now.?

2.7m for Channel 5's coverage of Ajax v Man United peaking at 4.5m.

Nice average. Very nice peak.

Quite a low night for the main channels apart from the Emmerdale rating.

I'm a little bit surprised the Great British Countryside didn't rate better considering it wasn't up against any soap. That's the sort of rating I thought it would've got against Corrie/Emmerdale so up against sub-4m competition, perhaps it should've done better. Europa League averaged really well for C5 considering how long the pre-match bit was, and a nice peak too. Europa League on ITV1 did about half a million worse than I expected - overall from 7-10pm, ITV1 probably rated about half a million lower than they did in recent weeks with the regular lineup, but I guess it had better demos. Inside Men hasn't been doing particularly well the last couple of weeks against poor competition so with Europa League rating about 1m higher than Eternal Law has been doing on ITV1, predictably I.M. took a bit of hit.

Inspector Montalbano turns the compass south for the BBC4 Saturday night drama slot at 9pm, from the Scandinavian climes of Borgen and The Killing, to the hotter regions of Italy, with a 10-part series about the titular Sicilian detective. The RAI Fiction/Palomar production began with 560,614 (2.5%) and an excellent Performance Index of 122.1

When EastEnders is constantly getting 7/8m in finals and rates lower than Emmerdale regular then I will say it's slumped.

Sometimes I question when people say "It'll be highere with iPlayer/ITV Player etc." Remember now that they can be watched on Virgin Tivo, BT Vision and some internet connected TVs. And I think in those instances BARB do measure those figures.
