As expected for NTA's in the early 6m's, slightly down from last year, but to be expected I think considering the tough opposition in comparison to last year (Masterchef/OBEM/CBB vs Crimewatch/Mary Portas/NCIS).

One Born Every Minute did very well, and it seems like that and Masterchef prevented NTA's from doing better than last year considering the drop after 21:00 for the NTA's. Celebrity Big Brother did okay but dented by the opposition.

I was totally wrong about that second CBB show then. A 16% share is excellent with most viewers staying up even though it was a weeknight. Not even a series low audience either.

The first show underperformed though as the NTAs took their toll. Pretty good for the awards really and seemingly successful in hurting an otherwise strong BBC lineup.

Rip Off Britain and DIY SOS didn't hold up as well as they did against the NTAs last year, with both down around -20% y-o-y:

“Wednesday 26th January 2011
19:00- The One Show: 4.4m 20.0%
19:30- Rip Off Britain: 4.2m 18.9%
20:00- DIY SOS: The Big Build: 4.5m 19.3%
21:00- Crimewatch: 3.5m 14.3%”

MasterChef has also got off to a slow start this series compared last year's numbers. The first five episodes have been down about -10% even though the competition generally has been easier and it's had better lead-ins from Holby City for a couple of episodes. It'll be interesting to see if it picks up next week once CBB is over - possibly the reality audience has been split there.

The NTAs did alright. 0.3m lower than last year but the competition in the 9pm hour was tougher and that's shown by the breakdown, as usually it picks up near the end of the broadcast IIRC but didn't last night. The cooking hour hasn't been doing well for C4 in recent weeks, I thought before the Heston show began, it would be getting ratings closer to 2m. One Born Every Minute did great once again though. CBB felt the heat at 9pm with the tough competition and it is quite weird how the eviction episodes normally keep rating lower than the HLs - as Dancc said, something has to be done about the evictions so more people tune in. The later 11pm episode did excellently for the timeslot though - I thought it was going to be lower than that as it was a weeknight. It's actually quite a similar rating to how a 11pm Channel 4 episode rated a couple of years ago, which is good going considering C5 normally get lower figures than C4.

I suspect the Liverpool v Man City match on Sky Sports is responsible for the slight dip in NTA figures .... two teams from ITV's northern heartland.

Channel 5 has acquired first-run terrestrial rights of drama series 'Once Upon a Time', for broadcast this Spring. They've also axed 'It's All About Amy'.

both good ideas.

"Once Upon a Time" also shows why my opinon on US shows is worthless, certainly at Upfronts, I didnt think Once Upon A Time, would work as a full length series.

Wednesdays ratings are as boring as Wednesdays TV, still at least NCIS is back soon, that will amuse me.

I think the MC scheduling has been terrible, (it's always bad). Even on DS Masterchef thread many missed Tuesdays episode, and there was confusion about it not being on tonight.
Last week it was Tuesday, Wendesday Thursday,
This week it was Tuesday, Wendesday
Next week is Wendesday
Even given the scheduling mess, it is down. I guess we'll see next week if it is BB related, it gets a varied demo, so you could be right?

Good NTA rating, Also glad to see Natural World documentary on BBC2 did well, saddest thing I've seen in ages about Small Loris in Java, watched it by accident and can't stop thinking about it.

Perhaps they're UK first run rights, as it hasn't been picked up by a digital channel yet, or has it?

this is an interesting bit of news from Broadcast.

Quote:
“Discovery drives off with C5’s Fifth Gear

Discovery has poached Channel 5’s flagship series Fifth Gear in a move that will shift the motoring show exclusively to pay-TV after 10 years of airing on the PSB.”

Desmond should have a go at this poaching lark.

Wow! Just noticed that now, viewers are incredibly loyal, late for a school night! Why did they have it on so late?

Yeah, also it seems like C5 will be promoting it well. They're showing an exclusive preview clip of Once Upon A Time tomorrow at 9pm just before the Celebrity Big Brother final, even though it probably won't be on air for another good few months.

ITV has ordered a new 6-part drama series about military wives, called 'SWAGS': http://bit.ly/xchhoW

Sounds like to me it could be a potential Wednesday 8pm drama this Autumn to take advantage of the 7.30pm Corrie lead-in. It's a nothern drama and got ex-Coronation Street production team working on it so could work in that slot. It looks like ITV are making more of an effort of having non-crime drama, probably because they've got so much crime drama already! They've commissioned 7 new dramas for this year, six of which aren't about detectives or cops (the only one is Endeavour).

I think Danny Cohen be happy to get rid of Masterchef - and to be honest it is a show which probably should have stayed on BBC2 and probably in a stripped format rather than random length primetime airings, but I suspect the budget cuts will mean it stays for now as it's probably realitively cheap.

I wonder if they'll dub it or subtitle it?

Brilliant idea. These 'sneak peaks' are the kind of thing the Australian networks do to much success.

The acquisition team have done well again to bag Once Upon A Time which is one of the most promising shows to emerge this season and further strengthens Channel 5's increasing relationship with ABC.

Only thing that puts me off is the Lost connection. That show did not end well.

It's actually been created by who I'd call the two weakest regular writers of Lost.

But I hear good things.

may I ask in what way it does that? if Body of Proof is going to be axed by ABC, then other than Castle, im not sure what you mean when you say "increasing relationship"

Grey's Anatomy as well, but that isnt on C5 that much.

no idea, and Broadcast is not saying, infact Broadcast has said the deal is not yet signed.

I don't think you're wrong. It doesn't work as a weekly series. And for all the talk of how well its doing in the US people forget that it started with a 4 in October and then basically dropped every week so that by the time it went on Christmas hiatus in December it was at a 2.9. It bounced back up when it returned in January but then ABC did their usual scheduling insanity and put it against the Golden Globes and then the NFC/Idol schedule on Fox so its dropped down again since its return. Its by no means a huge disaster at this point but its not the all powerful success that some have suggested either.

As I mentioned earlier though Five are going to have to be smart in how they schedule this. I think it needs to go out pre-watershed.
