Talking of which - that ITV Call The Midwife rival mooted earlier will likely feature Alan Carr in his first lead acting role as the head of a new all male midwife practice in Crewe.
It will recruit ex male cast members from Hollyoaks and be run by nuns from the Order of St Getemoff.
I would imagine an ITV take on the concept might envisage that as appealing to its audience..

So BBC doing VERY well with the drama so far this year, now two launches this week. Personally I think Prisoners Wives is going to be the next success story - the DSRPG seems to be predicting 5m approx, I think it will be higher and do very well.

I thought Birdsong was superb. I think its done pretty well given the content, its a very hard hitting drama and definately not your easy going Sunday night fare. I was surprised how well it held up week-on-week tbh. As RobbieSykes says, 7m for ep 1 and presumably over 6m for ep 2 are hardly flop numbers.

I dont think it will be that successful in terms of ratings but should be quite a criticial, modest rating drama. The name is awful though and makes it sounds like a cheap factual doc with Ronnie and Reggie's other halfs.

I agree about Prisoners Wives, it's not as dark and "gritty" as I expected when first announced, and previews suggest it's more "soapy" not in a bad way. I've seen good reviews for both of the new dramas so hope they both do well.
The first episode of Upstairs Downstairs had a screening today (I wonder why ITV chose to announce DA's new casting tonight
), which is getting some great reviews on twitter, TV & Satellite tweeted "look out for it next month" so I hope they start it after the last episode of Call the Midwife to give the best lead in possible.

Yeah. I'd say nearer 6m for PW. It could do quite well if it manages to attract the younger female demo along with the predictable 'older' BBC1 audience.
Inside Men looks rather slick. The demos should be good, although I can't see it doing big numbers, 4.5m-5m maybe.

Prisoners Wives seems to be a bit soapy and a bit gritty, hence being able to attract two different types of audience. In that way it's similar to CTM. Obviously it's ratings won't be in the same league, but I think it'll be a hit. And it has had very good reviews. I think the title will attract some people. Inside Job I don't think will do so well on Thu - 4-5m I reckon for that.
There is a certain comic elegance in David Jason's next TV comedy venture being set in a funeral directors.
Anyhow, I think Thora Hird and ITV got to that one many many years ago. And anyone who remembers it will still bear the scars...

Well that was a properly competitive night - especially at 8pm. Amazing that Top Gear had no impact - even though its not exactly a crossover audience, you'd still think the men would take control in some households and drag the ladies from CTM and DOI. Evidently not!
Call the Midwife just continues its incredible start. A massive, self-reliant hit straight out of the gate - and still growing! You could try that dozens more times and you wouldn't get the same result. The BBC drama bods must be ecstatic. Also, a solid performance from Birdsong - excellent TV if you're into that kind of thing, but I can understand that the arty slow silences would have turned plenty off too. Good to see the BBC had really invested in it, though - as lavishly produced as anything I've seen on British TV, with really compelling war scenes that made Downton's last year look a bit second rate. And it's not often you can say that.
Some Top Gear viewers were clearly stuck elsewhere last night - but it still did well, and will time shift hugely as usual. Really, you'd think the show would be showing more signs of age now - but its still so far ahead of everything else on BBC Two its unreal. ITV can be pleased that their stalwart line-up was up and stopped the bleeding of the past couple of weeks. Easy to announce their death on the back of a few weeks trend, but in the scheme of things they still make for a damn solid Sunday night for ITV.

I think Prisoners' Wives could do well but Tuesday night dramas tend to get 6-7m in the finals. I have a sneaking suspicion it could be big hit though.For some reason I just think it'll be in the 8m region.
And I see The Body Farm has been axed. No surprise as its recomission wasn't announced when Death In Paradise's was and DIP started after it.
