Wild at Heart seems stable and both of the latter shows should improve next week as I can't see Bomber Boys appealing to the same kind of audience as Birdsong, which finished decently. Top Gear appears to have been the show that lost out at 8pm which surprises me slightly; perhaps the use of repeats means viewers are tired of the show before a new series begins. World's Great Daredevils struggled on Channel 5 but, considering the lead in, Bad Boys didn't do too badly. Channel 4 recorded a steady night. As for TOWIE...it's in line with March 2011's premiere and I have the feeling it'll grow as the series goes on so I won't write it off yet.”

The Beeb should have been piling in with Upstairs Downstairs from this Sunday to keep the foot on the gas.Stuff like Bomber Boys and Paxman real home is BBC2. Certainly has been a strong start to this year for BBC1.

I see Got To Dance (first live semi-final) got over 1m last night for Sky1. Ashley also debuted with a strong 500k.

Marcus Bently's saying that at 9pm during the Olympics, BBC1 will be showing highlights. Are there really no live sports on at 9pm during the Olympics?

Cheers for those. Very nice numbers for Sky1 there, I had noticed that the Got To Dance audition shows have been a bit lower this year, but I suppose more people were recording them or watching the repeats this year. The live shows are more of an event though so people clearly made the difference as it did as well as ever and proved that it remains one of Sky1's biggest shows. Strong rating for Ashley's show too, and I can see it holding at that level or building a bit as it was pretty good actually,

They couldn't because of the Baftas, it's looking likely that it will start on the 19th now though.

The new DA casting has been all but confirmed now, Michael Ausiello has a article on it on TVLine. It does give me hope that Series 3 will be an improvement on the last, with this and the series only spanning two years.

It's bizarre and it's seemingly allowing the Dancing On Ice/Wild at Heart combination some respite in the 9pm hour. Does anyone have any idea what's replacing Call The Midwife yet?

Maybe they'll hold all the big events at 2am to fit in with the American audience.

Presumably we go back to new episodes of Antiques Roadshow.

Have they got anything else they could use? That seems very lazy considering it'll only be February and a lot of their usual summer programming won't be needed because of Euro 2012 and the Olympics.

There will be live swimming or live athletics at 9pm EVERY single night of the Olympics (excluding Opening / Closing Ceremonies).

What about 10pm? Is that when coverage begins to wind down with highlights etc?

Apart from the sprint races, Athletics is boring as hell and normally not popular. Will 7m+ people be watching a 30 minute 5000 kilometre race involving Kenyans/Ethiopeans and non-British runners? Cycling is where the big British chances of medals are but is there any cycling scheduled for peak time?

Evening athletics is generally approx 7pm to 10pm.

It varies a bit - the earliest finish is 9.20pm, and one other day is 9.30pm.

Generally 4pm to 6.30pm or 4pm to 7pm.

Conveniently scheduled not to clash with swimming / athletics!

What was the last programme to be top of the ratings by its second episode? I'm thinking The Darling Buds Of May** (1991) which went "straight in at number 1".

And what do these two programmes have in common, apart from their Sunday night slot?
Spoiler
Pam Ferris. What a superstar!

Super for Call the Midwife to increase against the opposition, if there was any doubt that this is a hit, the doubt must have gone away. Unless anything out blows the competition out of the water, this surely is contender for "Hit of the Year".

Dancing on Ice's results hit another low it seems and I think an all time low too.

It would be disappointing to see AR back at 8pm very soon - but I don't imagine it'll be too long, either. Hopefully one of the consequences of Call the Midwife's success will be BBC One taking another look at what is a bloody valuable slot. I think CTM is the first drama to premiere there since Hope Springs, which flopped back in Summer 2009. For the past few years, they've basically run with 6-10 weeks - then AR or occasionally Countryfile for the rest of the year. A waste.

In terms of the 9pm slot - C.M.W. said on the thread a few weeks back that Upstairs Downstairs was still being edited and was slated for March. I'm sure they'd like to premiere it on the 19th if possible - taking the last CTM as lead-in and sending viewers from one Heidi Thomas drama to another (!) - but perhaps that won't be possible.

I agree. I think it could do better than the usual Tuesday night drama average.”

Beats me as the format is creaking with age, desert islands and stroppy people you'd run a mile to avoid are something the Michael Green era ITV would have created and would avoid like the plague now. More proof Channel 4 hasn't got a clue now. I suppose they'll be reviving Brookside next.
However, I do hope Mrs Brown's Boys, now that the rival attraction of CBB has finished, passes the 5 million mark as this has been comedy gold and the irony with the cheap sets creases me up.

The Story of Musicals did very well and grew with each part, albeit slightly, how rare is it for BBC4 documentaries to do this well? I suppose it helped that it started with very little competition from the main channels (the day Panorama replaced Public Enemies).
