Re: C5 strategy. I don't deny its identity could be clearer, but don't see it as a major issue at this point in time. If it is unworkable as you are suggesting, how do you explain an old skewing import like Body of Proof launching successfully right in the middle of BB season? It started as well as Castle which began before BB arrived and is the superior show of the two.

A channel like 5 which reaches over 30 million people a week is able to get away with a broad mix of programming in my view. Even when BB is on you have shows like Neighbours which rate solidly in the older demographics on a daily basis. Through the digital channels they never neglect any part of their audience IMO.

They probably should have put a bid in for Big Brother

An alright night overall, BBC would have wanted more for Prisoner's Wives but tbh its a Tuesday and it hardly sounded like a big rater originally. They'll be happy to have a strong performance in the week.

For all the talk of Royal Bodyguard, its rather sad I'm just not surprised at ITV's ratings. The one great thing is that I think BBC Two will be able to really compete in that space (well I can't see ITV's Tuesdays improving, they seem to have flown the white flag - sad really). The Hour went out on Tuesdays last year and had some good final ratings, hopefully it'll grow this year as it certainly deserves to!

Other channels. Great for Ch4, okay for BBC Two and okay for Ch5. Shite for ITV. Oh look no one watches Geordie Shores, who'd a ****ing guessed it - does this mean the world will shut up about all these programmes yet? Certainly not the same 'high class' as 'bafta award winning' (ugh) TOWIE.


I don't believe The Exit List is real. I think ITV air black space for the entire hour. Is it even bad? Or is it just people don't want to watch it at 8 o'clock?! (The Chase does much better much earlier!)

Depressingly high share for Jeremy Kyle on ITV2.

I watched it last week, I LOVE quiz shows, but it is just silly.
Way too complicated, and they give them way too short time at the end to get out of the maze. I'm amazed that many are watching it tbh.

With the dismal ratings "Toxic Tuesday" gets for them, I don't know why - in the short term, till they get some suitable programmes in the can - they don't just air film repeats or old eps of Midsomer, Morse, etc for the 2 hours. None of those would sink below 2m, even if they are flogged to death on ITVs 2 and 3.

Nothing surprises me about ITV Tuesdays anymore. It's the same EEK! every week, which doesn't make it a shock anymore...and ITV seem to be doing nothing about it. ED falling below 7m in Jan is shocking too-I seriously hope for a sharp decline in the ratings this year, just so it makes ITV realise how dire the show has become and how completely unrecognisable it is nowadays.

Expected slightly more for Prisoners Wives, but I'd guess it'll settle at around 4-4.5m. I must have missed the announcement that Alex Polizzi is producing shows for BBC2..that was quite a shock. Anyone know what's happening with The Hotel Inspector?

Ch5 is missing CBB, but at least they have been above 1m in the key 9pm slots for the last 3 days and posted a strong Saturday.

I think ITV have given up on Tuesday nights now. They're probably waiting for the new football rights to kick in which may make Tuesdays slightly more bearable.

A 4.9m overnight for a drama isnt bad at all. An official for most new dramas over 5.5m is worthy of a recommision.

I dont really understand why some people thought it would get a 6m overnight, the plot doesnt sound that gripping and the title is awful. Wish I hadnt took so much notice of other predictions on the RPG and stuck with my 5m~ gut feeling.

That's an interesting list.Thanks rzt. The recent Tuesday dramas on BBC1 tend to end up with 6m, but there haven't been many huge shows there. Why don't people like watching drama on a Tuesday in the numbers they do on a Monday? Increased competition from football on other channels?

If they had given up then why are they still putting new content in those slots? They're wasting new gameshows that could be tried out on Saturdays and something like The Biggest Loser that pulled in respectable figures last year.

I think you're right. But there aren't that many Tuesdays taken up with football when you look at the year as a whole. Should get them some very good ratings when British teams are playing though.

I also see ITV are showing Man City's Europa League away match to FC Porto on February 16th. I thought Channel 5 were showing those matches?

My thoughts exactly, although the Champions League isn't a complete solution( they'll only be showing it for 16 Tuesdays a year), at least it will guarantee ITV1 5 million viewers on a Tuesday night, hoping English teams progress fromm the group stages. It can also send second division reality shows like TBL to the scrapyard.

That's the thing though - with it starting with 4.9m and assuming the show timeshifts about 1m like most dramas, there's no guarantee it'll get a consolidated series average of 5.5m once you factor in the possibility of it losing viewers for the remaining episodes. The competition it had last night was as easy as it possibly gets, it's rare when the other 4 terrestrial channels are all rating below 2.5m. So how would it hold up if it was actually facing some decent 3m or 4m+ competition? I think it'll hold up well next week as the first episode seems to have gone down well with viewers but the competition really intensifies in a couple of weeks when BFGW returns and then in a few weeks it'll be up against Gypsy Weddings and The Brits. There might not be that much of an audience crossover between PW and those two shows but it's bound to have some kind of effect on its figures. I think BBC One should be looking at trying to get new consolidated 6m+ drama series through anyway (5.5m averages is a bit 50/50 these days) to replace the likes of Spooks/Hustle/Waking The Dead/Ashes to Ashes which were capable of 6m+ officials year after year. They've managed to bag a massive one with Call The Midwife, I think ideally they would've been hoping for around 6m+ consolidated series average with PW too as it's supposed one of their biggest drama launches this year. We'll see how it goes though, it may well do a CTM and go up in the subsequent weeks!

Looks like they've managed to get the game on the main channel itself rather than ITV4. They're lucky with the date as Eternal Law finishes the week before so it works out well for them. Emmerdale will be a one-hour episode that night between 7-8pm.

I think TBL ended up on Tuesdays because ITV have more drama just now than they did at this time last year. It's a shame they've wasted it like this because with it and Long Lost Family, they had two passable returning factual series which they needed.

The Exit List was probably intended for Saturdays but it might have been between that and The Talent Show Story. I think The Exit List would probably have done better on Saturdays and TSSS wouldn't have done any worse on Tuesdays.

It's a bit of an overflow zone just now - I'm sure they still have some hope that within a particular niche, they'll find a couple of steady returning series. A bit like the US networks on Fridays. But I don't think they've got any great expectations.

Ideally they'd be able to put on nonsense like DIY SOS and get 4-5m viewers - they'd probably make a fortune - but there's no sign of that happening any time soon. If they could get a 3.5m average across the 2 hours, they'd probably be thrilled. But it's a cycle - because anything will do worse on Tuesdays than it would on any other night, they'll not risk a series they think could have a broad audience. Again, like the US networks who tend to shunt ageing series or niche genre programming to Fridays.

I'd agree that repeats would probably be a better option. Though they might be reluctant to put too many repeats in primetime and they can be expensive as well. Plus, it steps on ITV3's toes and that's doing so well for them. AFAIK, ITV don't get "free" repeats of their dramas - US networks are entitled to 2 repeats in season which is why they'll repeat even at really low numbers.

With Champions League on the Wednesday, the week after may well have 6 Corrie episodes then.

I think what you'll find is the 2nd division reality shows and gameshows will probably be moving to Thursday nights when the Champions League moves to Tuesdays. Wednesdays ought to be fine for ITV1 with Corrie back there and giving support to 8pm shows (possibly pre-watershed dramas) but Thursday 8.30-10pm is looking a bit suspect. To prevent Thursday from becoming a potential FlopZone, I reckon it would be an interesting idea if ITV take Wild at Heart and change it up from 10x1hr series to 20x30min series (maybe split into 2 series next year of 10x30) and put it on Thursdays at 8.30pm. I could see it getting 5-6m in that slot and at least providing a decent enough lead-in for 9pm. Otherwise there's a risk of whatever follows Emmerdale getting less than 4m and providing a low inheritence for 9pm shows.
