Coronation Street did very well with two very strong shares; again, considering the soap sandwich offering from Coronation Street, EastEnders looks slightly on the low side. Emmerdale performed reasonably well and the bad weather obviously helped Hollyoaks to get above 1m on a Friday for the first time in a while. Home and Away looks low but Neighbours is pretty consistent.

I don't follow it either, but this match is always a good rater for the BBC. Another success for the BBC could be Mrs Brown's Boys, which could pull in 5.5 million against an ailing Jonathan Ross.
ITV1 is in a real hole on Saturdays now. TV Burp is ending and none of their current shows have good ratings.

I would be astonished if only 21m watched Charles and Di in a more deferential age 30 years ago and with only 3 channels.

14m average for the evening session, 18.5m peak just after midnight.
I can't imagine anything post midnight has ever got that number. Although I do recall an 11.15pm Friday night terrestrial premiere of The Terminator on BBC1 getting a rather astonishing 13m audience in the late 80s/1990ish. That must have gone on till 1am.

As things stand the Super Bowl isn't sold as a separate event but is packaged as part of the existing NFL television licenses. For a broadcaster to qualify to air the Super Bowl they have to nationally broadcast regular NFL games which means any network that wanted exclusive rights would have to buy Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football plus the Sunday afternoon games. And I think I'm right in saying that under the current licensing deal no single network would be able to own both sets of Sunday games that are auctioned off because there are certain rules about what you have to show that they wouldn't be able to meet (the NFL licensing agreements are very complicated).
But just for the sake of reference the new NFL television deal which starts in 2014 and covers NBC, CBS, Fox and ESPN is worth just shy of $40 billion over 8 years or a little under $5 billion per year. Any broadcaster that wanted exclusive rights to everything would probably be looking at paying double that (probably more) because presumably everybody else would bid them up. I'm not sure anyone has that kind of money to play with. In fact there's an argument to be made that the broadcast networks at least are potentially losing money on the existing NFL deals.
The Super Bowl itself though is essentially a license to print money for the broadcast networks. It'll be interesting to see just how much longer the NFL refuses to let ESPN air it (currently they aren't allowed because they're a cable network). When ESPN is allowed to broadcast the Super Bowl is when the broadcast/cable divide has officially closed.

Don't think that's ever been a realistic prospect. It's just too ludicrously expensive. A good summary of the contracts is here:

With Disney's decision to let ESPN take on all of their divisions sports portfolio from ABC, it seems like a happy equilibrium has been reached on all sides now, with everything tied down till 2021. Didn't stop the NFL extracting sizeable increases from the latest deals, mind you.

Actually we've never launched a successful British soap since Eastenders, Hollyoaks is more of a cult thing for teenagers. I don't think with the track record from Albion Market to Echo Beach we ever will again.
However, its maybe people are getting tired of Home and Away as it has been on for 23 years now and the audience is more likely to be over 40 than the teens that made up the bulk of its following in the glory days..

Thanks both for the info. It's a wonder ABC don't enforce their links with ESPN to get a slice of the Superbowl pie. Some ridiculous money going around there - it makes NBC's Olympic Deal comparable to the sort of cash the BBC shells out for the World Darts here.

I wonder what sort of get out C5 might have of their "for life" deals with the Aussie soaps.
Also just a thought but wonder how Home and Away and Neighbours might fair if they swapped their slots in the evening on C5.
I don't know how much Channel 5 pay for Home and Away, but Neighbours last contract was too much for BBC One. Basically Channel 5, if they pulled the plug, might have to pay the Aussies a fair whack in compensation. Yet if the show starts to tank, and ratings have fallen by 30 pc recently, Des won't want to spend on an ailing show that is losing money.

NFL rates well hence why the broadcast network pay top dollar for the rights. CBS was hit badly in the 90s when they lost the NFC Championships to FOX, they acquired AFC rights in 1998 and I imagine they'll fight tooth and nail to keep those rights.
Wonder who has the best NFL rights package, the new CBS NFL contract allows to air some NFC games and they have teams such as the New England Patriots who are big ratings pullers.

Hope that The Magicians can go above 5m and Mrs Browns Boys can be closer to 6million viewers cos it got 5.4million on Monday after TRB with no snow. Take The Chav Out (I like it though) was a classic episode tonight, will get a high +1 rating due to word of mouth.
There is more snow to come next week as well by the looks of it. The cold air clings on to the far east of the UK and eventually we get a renewed push right across the country with fresh snowfalls.
