American Idol remains the #1 show on US TV, at least for now. Nothing is beating that Wednesday episode yet. If FOX were to cancel it (and they won't) then ABC or even The CW would be in there in a flash. Plus, cancelling Idol for X Factor (the lower rated of the two) would be foolish.
FOX had little choice in the end. Their dream would have been that Cowell & Fuller put their heads together and came to an arrangement that suited them both - basically Cowell contributing X Factor US rights in exchange for a stake in American Idol and thus allowing them to use aspects of both formats to bring longevity to Idol. But that was always unlikely to happen and even less so when Fuller sold his company.
They had to buy them both. They could certainly have managed them better over the past 12 months. But maybe they'll live and learn.
They knew in 2004/05 that they had a problem and it took the personal involvement of Rupert Murdoch and lots of cash to try and resolve that problem. But it was only for a few years. In fairness, the kind of declines Idol has had this year have been predicted for many years now. The length of its dominance has been quite remarkable.
