VOIP with no subscription
I am thinking of getting rid of my home phone and going for a wireless broadband service we have here, depending on price and such. anyway if i do go for this system I thinking about having a voip system in place, but since it will only be used for incoming calls I don't want to pay a subscription like vonage, so is there any VOIP system that charges for use only and no subscription and that will allow me to have a number that is not going to cost people a fortune to call?
Thanks |

Yes, there are several around like BT Talk and Skype
BT Talk uses your Home Hub and gives you a local rate number Here is the link http://www2.bt.com/static/i/btretail..._activate.html |

You can get a free local telephone number from sipgate for incoming calls with no line rental. Outgoing call rates are quite cheap too.

I agree with jwball.
www.sipgate.co.uk is the way for you to go - Free incoming number (you can even choose which area code you'd like it to be in) and reasonable (although not the cheapest) outgoing call rates. |

Yep sipgate is the biggest of the independents.
It does stuff like free mp3 messaging too. |

I thought BT have done away with Bt talk? as for Talk Talk that is not VOIP and you know full well I would not touch Talk Talk with a barge pole, but thanks anyway. |

You can also port your existing number to Sipgate.
It's worth noting they're not a member of ITSPA - http://www.itspa.org.uk/members.html so you don't have much protection should anything go wrong. For residential use and not wanting to pay anything for the service, It's not much of an issue. For business use it's sensible going for a ITSPA member. |

It does stuff like free mp3 messaging too. But no rental is a bonus, i only want it so people like my Dad can phone me and not pay huge amounts to reach my mobile. I still have to look at which way I am going, if this wireless system can get me a good speed at a decent price, then i will go for it. |

I've always found Voipfone to be great value for money.

I've got to second the voipfone recommendation which comes from my own experience. They also do a service for BT phone owners so all outgoing calls are at voipfone rates. A good compromise for the less technical or non internet connected who want some of the call rate advantages of voip.
As a pure voip service they're easier to peer with than sipgate. |

We have been using www.voipdiscount.com for the outgoing and Sipgate's free number for the incoming for a good number of years, no line rental to pay of course, total cost per year about £21 including a good number of international calls, voipdiscount.com offer an incoming number also.
As a side note Gigaset.net offer a free Voip service to other Gigaset phones worldwide. http://gigaset.com/hq/en/cms/PageGig...wideCalls.html |

We have had a line with sipgate for years dating back from when we lived in France & being able to use a UK phone number saved us a lot of money. Subsequently we have got another couple of numbers that we use for business. However it is a slight worry that support is a bit remote. On the odd occasions that we have needed to contact support we had to fill in a form & wait a day or two for a response. I believe that they are based in Germany. There doesn't seem to be any way to port the numbers to another telco which is another slight worry although TBH we have had no problems it does niggle a bit as to what would happen if they went bust or we encountered problems.

You can port the numbers from Sipgate. Voipfone is one provider who could take on the numbers for you. It's a good idea to use a ITSPA member if you're using a number for business. http://www.itspa.org.uk/members.html Using a provider with a ITSPA membership offers you some protection with regards to your number being safe. |

then again, its never going to be the most reliable option. all broadband has down time, which obviously would take out your voip line...... where as pstn are very infrequently affected by outages. |

It's good to know that I can port our numbers from Sipgate. I had looked at Gradwell but they don't seem to able to port from Sipgate plus they charge a monthly line rental on top of call charges. If I read Voipfone's website correctly they don't charge a line rental & their call charges are very similar to those of Sipgate.
Call costs can appear similar, Voipfone charge per second with a minimum of 1p. Sipgate charge per minute which often works out more. |

im only guessing here...... but I'd imagine it would be more expensive than standard landline + broadband.
the company is going to be in our High town in a couple of weeks time, so I was going to go and have a word, but I am working, so will have to phone them instead. Quote:

Not a problem, the only reason I was going to have voip is so my father can phone without phoning my mobile phone. but even that may not matter as my Father is thinking about getting rid of his home phone and getting a mobile only as it will work out cheaper. But i have been hearing so good stuff about the wireless system, being more reliable than many peoples ADSL service. The thing is i think they have left it too late for the city itself and also where my friend live as FTTC is suppose to be here this year. this wireless system is great for people out in the sticks. My friend will use it, she hates Bt more than me, so she will do anything to get away from Bt. |
