24fps?

Four years ago when I bought our 46in Sony LCD, the advice in What Video & HDTV mag was that a set that handled Blu Rays at 24fps was better than those that couldn't.

I am now looking for a 37-40in tv for a large bedroom, but don't want to spend a lot of money on it! Basically the screen size and being 1080p are the main requirements, plus I want it to handle 24fps Blu Ray, but can't find that on most spec lists, even on manufacturers own sites.

Are all tv's now doing 24fps as standard?

I think I would be safe again with Sony, but I have seen some well priced Toshiba & Samsung models, such as the Tosh 40BV701/KV701 & BV 801 and the Samsung UE40D5003 & LE40D503.

Does anyone know if these specific sets handle 24fps?

Many thanks.

I would have thought it's standard now on a Full HD 1080P set.

Yup, I tried there too. The 801 specs don't mention it and the 701 is not on there, I assume it has been replaced by the 702. The difference between those sets appears to be Freeview HD on the 801, but if they both do 24fps, I will save the £50 and get the 701 as I never watch live tv, only recorded PVR content.

Done a bit of digging at the Toshiba site and found online manuials in pdf format. The 801 has a specific setting called Cinema, which on p32 of the manual states that films are done at different frame rates to tv broadcasts, so switch this on when you are watching a film. It makes no mention of 24fps specifically, nor Blu Ray, and the specs later in the manual say it will accept 1080p 50Hz and 1080p 60Hz.

For the 701, the Cinema mode is mentioned on p27 as a preset, with no reference to frame rates at all, alongside Dynamic and Natural etc, however in the specs, as well as 1080p 50/60Hz it states seperately 1080p 24Hz.....

Any opinions on whether these will mean genuine 24fps playback?

More than likely, certainly the one that says 1080p24 should be fine. That's the sticker Sony 24fps sets get.

A sticker on the TV HD-Ready 1080P guarantees 24 fps synchronisation

By way of information to anyone interested, I spoke to Toshiba UK on Friday to ask about 24fps and was passed to someone in the tech dept, who then asked to call me back this morning as the head of the dept was not in, so he coulc get a definitive answer for me.

That answer was no, neither of the models listed would play at 24fps, despite the 701 listing 1080p 24Hz in its specs!

I am a bit confused tbh, but as they did themselves out of a sale, I have to take that as the final word, despite what the maual may imply.

Check what refresh rates the TV supports, if it's evenly divisible by 24 then it should display 24p without judder.

I've got a 19" Alba LCD thats only suppose to be HD Ready and that supports 1080p 24Hz, having a brand name on a TV means nothing anymore, Toshiba are rubbish.
