My current Blu Ray player and DVD-Recorder (both Panasonic and over 2 years old) have SD slots but won't play any video on those cards, even that filmed on Panasonic camera/camcorders.

Can anyone recommend a Blu Ray player with a card slot /USB input, that will play videos from that type of media, the more formats the better? I would also like it to have iPlayer capability and change from £100 would be great, if thats not asking too much....

Many thanks

Why don't you tell us what format the video files you have created are in? Or amend the files using PC software to convert them into a format that your current player is capable of decoding (probably AVI/DivX).

I'm not sure what format the files I have tried are, other than mpeg4 from a Panasonic camcorder and WMV from a friend. Files from a Sony camera and our Panasonic compact won't play, although jpeg images will from the same sources. The videos appear as thumbnails alongside the stills, but won't play.

I will try and find out more, but the reason I ask is that I would prefer original video's, without any loss of quality from conversion, so a multiformat option would be better. The fact that our old equipment does not access iPlayer is another reason why I am considering a new machine, whilst the old one can go in the bedroom with the tv I am going to buy (see 24fps thread).

Rather bizarrely the SD card slots on Panny Bluray players and tv's only play videos in MPEG2 which is the regular dvd format.
A bit stupid that it won't play the videos recorded on the Panny camcorder in MP4 although you can connect that via USB or HDMI and play directly from the camcorder.

I have a Panny BD30 which is now 4 years old . Its fully multiregion for both BD and dvd but it only plays stills from the card slot.

I bought a PS3 for music storage but one bonus is that plays videos in various formats and you can copy them from your camcorder or phone and store them on the PS3

My camcorder is 8 years old, pre HDMI and connects via firewire to the DVD Rec. I have a PS3, or rather my son has a PS3, does it have a card slot or do I get video on it in some other way?

What format are your camcorder recordings if its 8 years old.

The PS3 has a USB slot so you can either use a USB stick or use one of the USB adapters that take an SD card in them.

Of course this might mean you have to copy your video content to the PC first but that should be easy enough.
You can either copy to the PC in its native format or use the PC to convert it to MP2 or MP4 .
Once its in one of those formats you can transfer to your SD card/USB stick and then it copies to the PS3 in seconds

If you have the video on the SD card you need one of these.

That goes straight into the PS3.
The PS3 can play MP2 and MP4 aswell as some other formats

All you need to do is ensure you have a modern SD card and not one of the old type and if the video is not in the right format download Format Factory or Any Video Converter for free and convert into which format you want .

The camcorder uses miniDV mostly, but can record mpeg4 on an sd card. The various options do seem simple enough, but I still think it would be easier if there was a player that had an sd and/or usb slots that just handle most formats. Especially since my wife hopes to use it also, and she still requires someone to talk her through using a usb stick with a laptop, every time she uses it.....

if you are recording video to sd card, my guess is that its using some weird codec that the blu-ray player does not support.

If you are happy with the blu-ray side of the player then consider a standalone media player, though not sure about iplayer support.

Ultimate would be a SFF PC with a blu-ray drive will be able to play back everything you can think off (local or online) but you are looking at around £175 for that solution.

I previous had a LG BD390. I now have a LG BD570.

Both play most things I have thrown at them:

avi
mp4
mkv
mp3

The only exception is FLAC files. It has a usb slot at the front which is compatible with NTSC formatted drives (very important!).

It also is wireless and has a LAN, which can be used to stream content from a PC. Also has IPlayer built in too.
