You make a suggestion and then the world is coming crashing down.
DS has become so childish it's beyond the joke now

If you are calling me childish for questioning your comment about people having BBQs on Thursday night then you are taking this way too seriously.

Last nights from the TV ratings thread:

Emmerdale - 7.15m
EastEnders - 7.95m
Coronation Street - 8.36m & 8.58m

Hollyoaks seems in great danger of being beaten by E4 and TBBT. I wonder whether we may soon see E4's 6.30 TBBT move...?

Hollyoaks should just be put out of its misery. The show is clearly dying a death and Channel Four have had several different producers trying to save it since 2009 yet none of them seem to be working. You have to wonder how the hell it ended up in this situation.

I'm more concerned however by the fact Emmerdale is losing viewers at a fast pace then of course there is EastEnders which also seems to be shaking viewers. Corrie is the only one that remains consistant at around the 8/9 million mark. Come the Summer the soaps could be as low as 4 million for goodness sake. They all need to get their acts together. Shows like Call The Midwife prove the audiences are there if the material is enjoyable enough so there are no excuses for the soaps I'm afraid.

It seems Corrie managed to bounce back after the football clash.
EE & ED not so much.

That's ED's lowest friday overnight rating this year.

Neighbours dropped below 1m for its teatime showing on Friday, I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. C5 need to do something, it's not good enough.

Some promotion on the other main channels would be good. As well as some big stories going on. I hope they milk Chris and Aidan for all its worth.

I do agree with your sentiment. People wont watch the soaps regardless (unless there is nothing better on) if the quality isn't there, in my view. Equally, can soap viewers expect consistent quality when then producers have to churn out so many episodes a week?

Just out of interest, Kevin O'Sullivan was bigging up Corrie yesterday.

I absolutely agree. Some major promo needs doing because it is brilliant at the moment, in my view. It, along with Strictly, are the only shows I actually switch the telly on to watch now.

We all need to remember that ratings are just that. They don't measure quality at all.

Furthermore, in the case of Neighbours, there are many more opportunities (up to ten I believe) to watch it now, so the viewer-ship will be split across all screenings and viewings.

He was saying that during the last year and a half, it has been consistently "good" and that it beats it's rivals hands down.

Nothing new there then.
He has ALWAYS bigged up corrie (and Emmerdale) and just like much of the people at the Daily Mirror he's very Anti BBC too

EastEnders will get around 5million all summer as it's going to be on BBC2 because of the Olympics/Football and will clash against the sports events. Corrie & Emmerdale will obviously remain on ITV1 but could be out of their slots at times

Maybe they screen it too many times - I think it might be better if there were only three/four times a day: 1:45, 5:30 and 7:00.

Mind you looking at BARB, the 7pm edition gets around 200k viewers regularly -

w/e 12 Feb 2012

NEIGHBOURS (FRI 1900) 227k
NEIGHBOURS (THU 1900) 196k

On C5:

NEIGHBOURS (FRI 1729) 1.25m

NEIGHBOURS (TUE 1346) 0.92m

The lunchtime edition is quite high I guess. I wish we knew if C5 were happy with the ratings though.

Five will want their moneys worth and they repeat all their Shows like hell (well are any of their programes actually made by five?)

it doesn't matter anyway because the repeat showings doesnt even add to much anyway.Which is why they are not always reported.

Neighbours NEVER hardly ever makes the top 10 most watched programes on fiver/5* or whatever they call it these days. Home & Away pretty much takes most of the top 10

Neighbours hardly ever makes the top 10 on 5* because it's not a First Look while Home and Away is so in theory, Home and Away should rate very well on 5*. I guess it does.

Yep and at times the first-look pulls out a big rating in the over nights too but that depends on the storyline i guess

He isn't "anti the BBC" any more than I am. He was bigging up 'Call The Midwife' the other week.

Is your "...5 million..." prediction during the summer for Eastenders a 'face saving' exercise? If it was top quality all the time and 'must-see', people would tune in regardless...right?

200,000 for the 5* showing is pretty dame good wouldn't you say? I didn't realise it was that high, to be fair.

I don't know what Channel Five's expectations are, but it is worth remembering that Channel Five is the UK's fifth terrestrial channel.

However, you are happy to quote Eastenders' BBC3 repeat figures and the omnibus editions when it suits you ay, in my opinion!

In my opinion, EastEnders only gets what it does due to the channel it appears on, it's time slot and lack of credible competition.

...and what happens when EastEnders clashes with a credible alternative? It drops to 5.5 million. They are the real figures.

Ratings over recent years indicate to me that the GBP's viewing habits appear to be changing. Drama, talent shows and scripted reality seem to be more popular now. In fact I don't know any under 30s who watch the soaps.

The challenge for the soaps is to stay relevant, 'realistic' and 'real' while maintaining consistent quality. Apart from the die-hards, people won't watch the soaps regardless.

All of the above is just my opinion.
