Fewer episodes (maximum of 4)
An end to doubles (Corrie and Emmerdale)
August breaks
Less episodes means the money saved goes straight back into the show, upping the quality of production
Better writing and research; give up-and-coming writers a chance to shine
Acting ability over looks
More black, Asian and maybe Polish/Chinese characers who integrate fully and are not token
More strategic exposure, for example afternoon repeats on ITV 1, with Omnibus Editions on Saturday nights on ITV 1
A richer mixture of characters e.g. middle aged/older, middle class etc. so that people think there's something for everybody (not really applicable to Corrie)
Far, far fewer spoilers or better hidden spoilers to reignite the element of surprise
I'd say 500k is pretty comparable to Corrie and Enders in terms of the population: viewers ratio.

But a whopping 35% audience share!
