Sorry if this has been asked many times before but I am curious to know why some repeat viewings (i.e. BBC 3 EE and Home and Away on 5*) are included in the ratings round up and not others, such as the Neighbours on 5* or the Corrie repeats on ITV2 or the various +1 repeats. I guess it would make the list rather long and complicated if they were all included but it seems a little unfair to include some and not others.

Excuses don't cut it. If its not the football or the weather its now not having adverts... its funny how its only EE effected by that isn't it.
Every episode should be at a standard where it can match if not beat Corrie. The fact it is one million behind it isn't good. Perhaps Corrie being ahead is more down to the fact viewers think its more exciting at the moment? is that so hard to grasp? Corrie looks entertaining therefore is getting better ratings as people want to watch it. You can't keep saying EE needs constant adverts to pull in the viewers. That's saying the show can't cut it on its own name and reputation alone. For example if EE gets a better rating for tonights episode than it did yesterday's then we can turn around and say viewers must be liking the Moon bruvs and Derek's storyline.. because that is what the ratings would indicate. If it gets lower tonight then we could say its because people are bored.. not because its hot weather.. which it isn't, or that some 3rd division football team were playing. ED has a better share than EastEnders and is less than a million behind.. now I don't know when the last time ED got over 9 million viewers but I am guessing its been a few years so their figure is right for them. EastEnders figure isn't. Still those in denial about the state of EE are to blame for its continued decline. Burying your head in the sand or making excuses won't hide the shows problems and there are many. You must know that EastEnders has a better younger demo than the other soaps so of course Football and other events will sometimes go against it and this has always been the way. The BBC3 repeat also is very consistent at 600k and maybe if the BBC were to drop that and the ever popular Omnibus (Normally adds an extra 1.6m) you would see the main showing rise a little. |

Do those figures include HD for Corrie? EE's HD figures are included in the final rating on BARB, but for some reason HD stats for ITV aren't. I think all the Corrie figures should be at least 500k more.
![]() somebody posted last years week-by-week top eps in the thread last month sometime, think it was 'rzt', and they included HD for corrie and corrie was higher almost all the time - except for when EE had big weeks like baby swap reveal. |

I think someone else said that soaps always get high ratings in January, so it's safe to assume that it is one of the biggest months for all soaps. So you have to ask yourself why EastEnders doesn't have a major storyline running at the moment? Surely that is part of the problem...?

no, they don't seem to include HD for corrie

I'm not sure I'd like that...My post with the ratings wasn't supposed to nudging one soap ahead of the other, I was just trying to show that EE's ratings in Jan, for the most part, were pretty consistant and that there isn't that much to choose between either soap. I guess with both shows you could keep on adding the omnibus ratings, the +1/BBC 3 channels ratings, the HD channels ratings, the Iplayer/ITV Player views etc etc, and we'd still be none the wiser. There is so many different ways, times and mediums to watch the soaps in, I'm astounded that they get the overnight figures that they do get. |

I don't think it's a problem, but obviously some people would prefer it with big storylines all the time. If they are well written the the little character driven eps can be really good. It's a nice light and shade for when the next big storyline comes into play. Obviously some people may not share my opinion though.
I don't have the HD channels, do they have EE and Corrie in HD?! EastEnders has been showin in HD since Stacey's exit (xmas day 2010) corrie was earlier that year (may i think) BBC3/ITV2 and Omnibus are not added to any of these figures by the way. EastEnders tends to add from 600k to 1.8million in the BBC 3 repeat and an extra 1.5-1.8m on sunday Omnibus (figures not included in official ratings though) |

I see I must have touched a nerve. All this mad defending of EastEnders ratings is laughable and really not worth the bother. All those ratings prove is exactly what I said. EastEnders ratings have declined since the start of Jan while Corrie has remained consistant.

EastEnders figures are all HD included but Corrie's are not (something todo with ITV) so around 300-500k needs to be added on to the figure but look at the Above EastEnders comes out top quite a few times anyway.

Thanks Dan, I didn't know what Easties Omnibus got. I know the episodes tend to get between 500k and 900k on IPlayer too.
No one is defending anything actually. I just listed what the ratings were. From what I can see, both are pretty consistant over the past couple of weeks. Yet here we are in 2012 and its barely getting over 9 million. Whats at fault here? storylines thats what. So again I say EE needs to up its game. If people have a problem with me saying that then its up to them but I certainly don't expect to be attacked over it like I have been in this thread today! |

EastEnders started out in January getting over 9 million an episode in the overnights which has risen to 10 million in the officials for some of the episodes. For the past two weeks however most of the episodes have been below 9 million. Now having looked upon Dans advice I did take a read though the old threads and guess what? EastEnders was averaging 10/11 million in the overnights in January 2010 alone!!

I thought we were just talking about Jan 2012?! ![]() However if you want to drag us back in time to Jan 2010, here we go Corrie- 2010 W/E 10th Jan - 11.79,11.71,11.68, 11.68,11.62 W/E 17th Jan - 11.83, 11.55, 11.40, 11.01, 10.84 W/E 24th Jan - 11.29, 11.07, 10.63, 10.51, 10.47 EE- 2010 W/E 10th Jan - 11.64, 11.62, 11.25, 11.16 W/E 17th Jan - 11.65, 11.40, 10.90, 10.89 W/E 24th Jan - 10.88, 10.48, 10.46, 10.28 Again figures from BARB. Yes EE was averaging 10/11 million in 2010, but then Corrie was too. So are you saying that it's just EE that has dropped it's ratings because of quality , because if so you have to lump Corrie into that theory too. No one is attacking you. I haven't said anything personal or insulted you. I'm just asking you to explain your theory. If personally think EE needs to up it's game because you do not enjoy the storylines/characters then that's fine. If you're bringing ratings into it though, obviously you should show how the ratings back up your theory. |

If you compare the ratings for EE to Jan 2010 and Jan 2011 you can see it is down by nearly two million in some cases. I wasn't discussing Corrie's drop because inspite of everything Corrie still managed to get nearly 13 million viewers last week. I was discussing EE's drop because I think EE needs the most work and it didn't get anywhere near 12 million for Pat's exit or her funeral. Some took offence to me saying I wanted EE to up its game and went on the hard EastEnders defensive. At the end of the day I'm a fan. |

I think that it's fine if you had started a thread and said in your opinion EE needs to up it's game. But this is obviously a ratings thread, so if you're saying it needs to up it's game then it's going to be related to the ratings. Corrie has had big storylines the past week and got great ratings, but you were saying that EE's ratings for Jan 2010/2011 were higher than 2012 due to a decrease in form. No one was disputing that they were higher in these years, but you also have to say Corrie's were higher too, so how do you explain the drop for them? Do you think they need to up their game too? |

Now ask why Pat's exit on EE didn't manage to get big ratings both for her death and then for her funeral, not to mention David's short return. This is Pat Butcher we are taking about. Not some character who had only been there four years. |

Not bad. I'm particularly impressed with Corrie's ratings.
.But if Corrie can pull in 12 million I really don't see why EastEnders can't. |

In light of the fact Corrie got over 12 million viewers for Becky's exit no. I would say Corrie is still able to draw viewers in. Likewise with last nights ratings. Viewers wanted to watch.

The highest rated episode for EE that week was over 2 million more than Corrie's highest rated episode for that week. The 2 weeks of David's return all got between 9.45-11 million. Those are very consistant figures. People didn't just tune in to see him once and not tune in again. It got good ratings for the whole storyline. Like wise with Corrie, now they've got a big storyline so have got bigger ratings over the past week than they have for the rest of January. I'd say both soaps are still able to draw viewers in. |

Personally I think that if these rather flawed ratings figures show anything at all, it's that they can be easily distorted one way or the other, depending on your point of view, but they are not an indication of quality or of the satisfaction people get from watching a program, they are just a rather crude indication of bums on seats. I would much rather see the AI figures for the soaps. Do they get published anywhere? I know they do for Doctor Who and they're always very high. |

I think they are only told to the BBC and then the BBC lets the programme makers know. The only AI figures I've heard is when a show's producers have stated them or the BBC have very rarely mentioned them here and there. |

That will be for December then not January.
So if you just want to refer to just Jan 2012 then that makes my point easy. EE beat Corrie on the first three weeks of the month from the ratings supplied by BARB. If you believe that EE's ratings suggest a drop in quality, then the same has to be said of Corrie. It's my personal opinion that Corrie will do better than EE on the final week of Jan ratings, once they have been realeased and therefore both soaps would have had a good month. |

My point was that the decrease in ratings has affected both soaps and I asked you why you thought this was. If you don't want to debate the ratings then don't answer the posts. Not everyone is going to agree with you and not everyone is going to agree with me. I actually thought you were providing an interesting discussion. Just because we don't agree it doesn't mean there is no point in discussing things. |
