Regardless of what the usual naysayers would like to think it was a good figure considering the competition which had a 30 minute head start. Seeing as the past few Mondays (key word there, Mondays. I am not comparing with Friday's rating which wasn't great and I am not excusing it) have been topping 8m it is clearly an anomaly.

Corrie gets the legitimate excuse of CIN so why all of a sudden are we not allowed to use the RVP as a reason for EE's figure last night? It clearly had an effect.

EE was obviously dented by RVP last night. It will be back to it's usual 7m+ tonight.

Did it though? If it had been what dented it then surely it's ratings would be up on the usual, they weren't. Even taking into account the different air day to usual, for RVP to have lost none of it's viewers at all, and in fact, be up on last year, against a big two soap, surely says a lot about current viewer loyalty? Surely they should at least both be down?

Also what's with the we and them, it's a soap opera not a football team, you don't have to only like or dislike one or the other, you can be indifferent.

I just saw an Emmerdale star retweeting the news about it being ahead off EastEnders by a million, hilarious that actors actually take it as seriously as some on here.

Didn't it air on a weds last year? Monday night is a much better slot especially airing in the usual home of the two strongest showing editions of Corrie... i bet people tuned in just for that.

On weds last year it wouldn't have had that corrie loyalty as corrie wasn't on weds last year.

All in all comparing to other similar occurances like when corrie goes up against strictly or CIN ee's rating is comparable.

If the RVP is on a monday again next year we'll have a fair comparison to make then too as there'll be some historical evidence of a clash

This and whats more at 8:30 9.2m tuned in and then the peak was 10.1m overall. It was promoted well and had some big and popular acts performing. Its like corrie against CIN the 7:30pm is usually dented but the 8:30pm showing is usually welldown but thats just due to Strong Comp as was last night with BBC1 rating lower than normal.

Shocking rating for EastEnders, has there ever been such a long succession of bad ratings before. Has Emmerdale ever beaten it so frequently before?

It's definitely nowhere near in danger of being axed - even though it's ratings are down, it's still rating way better than most of the BBC's current output.
It fills up too much evening schedule time for them to consider dumping it.
Maybe it needs a rethink / revamp - and maybe that will happen - but I'd hardly call that "trouble".

Well said! This guy is obsessed by EE and it's ratings to the point of trying to provoke. It's like yes they are down, by they are nowhere near disastrous and it won't have gone unnoticed to the powers that be that things need to pick up a bit...

If Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale all drop down to 1 or 2 million then I can see all the soaps being axed then but I think Eastenders will be better by the 30th Anniversary

One of the most sensible posts I've ever read. There's a lot of truth in your words.

It's all swings and roundabouts. EastEnders is in a rut ratings wise but it's nowhere near crisis levels. "Crisis" is when it's barely able to scrape 4 or 5 million each night, not when it's still regularly attracting anything between 7-8 million with the odd exception. Emmerdale is a good example of a soap bouncing back from a ratings slump when you think of the changeover between Anita Turner and Gavin Blyth. It was a slow process getting the viewers back but it did pay off in the end.

Heaven help James if/when Corrie should ever find itself in a slump. I'll be sure to remember all of these posts about EastEnders when it happens.

Not only ratings wise, they are in a rut creativity as well. The show is balls currently and going by spoilers will continue to be for a while.

Its only the same few who keep defending and excusing the ratings for EE to the point of making out anyone who questions the ratings being down isn't a fan or is some sort of ''hater''. I mean how patronising can you get.

Even if Eastenders does have a good week at Christmas (which will probably be a short term boost only) that won't hide the fact the ratings for the show are in a very bad place. Look how close Emmerdale is to it. We are in December and EE is below 8 million on overnights with Edale a few hundred thousand behind it. No one is saying the show will be axed but things in EEs garden are most certainly not rosey and yes James is right. If EE doesn't have a good Xmas then questions probably will be asked about what is going wrong..

Well the spoilers sound good. I think lots of people will tune in next week on Thursday and a week on Friday and during the Christmas holidays to see Max's secret being revealed and to see how Derek dies and to see the aftermath on Boxing Day and the 27th December and I think lots of viewers will tune into Eastenders on New Years Eve and New Years Day and Thursday 3rd January and for Friday 4th January

I think people defend, becuase other people attack... it's a natural reaction. it's always "those same few ee fans" who get blamed and yet never the "few other" who obsessed by going on the offensive against ee all the time. Like yes we hear you ratings are down. But the show isn't going anywhere so you can call off the party.
