Here's the consolidated ratings for the big two soaps so far this year (exc +1). Also the equivalent official averages (January to 2nd week of September) for the last decade:

EastEnders:
2003- 12.34m
2004- 11.49m (-7%)
2005- 10.03m (-13%)
2006- 9.25m (-8%)
2007- 8.67m (-6%)
2008- 8.41m (-3%)
2009- 8.19m (-3%)
2010- 9.23m (+13%)
2011- 9.02m (-2%)
2012- 8.26m (-8%)
2013- 7.71m (-7%)

Coronation Street:
2003- 13.19m
2004- 12.05m (-9%)
2005- 11.01m (-9%)
2006- 10.08m (-8%)
2007- 10.02m (-1%)
2008- 9.56m (-5%)
2009- 9.20m (-4%)
2010- 9.40m (+2%)
2011- 9.36m (-0%)
2012- 8.85m (-5%)
2013- 9.09m (+3%)

Worth noting that in 2007-2009, one episode of EastEnders was clashing against Emmerdale on a weekly basis, resulting in depressed averages for those 3 years compared to what would've been the case without all those Emmerdale clashes. Note how close EastEnders was in overtaking Coronation Street in 2010 but since then EE has fallen -16% compared to CS's -3% and the gap between the two in 2013 so far has been the biggest it's been for at least 10 years. I don't have Emmerdale data to hand due to all the missing HD figures on BARB.

Emmerdale is performing really well. I wonder if it's picked up some viewers who stopped watching EastEnders?

Solid for Corrie as always, really not sure what to say about EastEnders anymore. No more excuses can be laid out, it's September, cold, pitch black at 8pm, yet it still struggles to crack 7m and the low share shows how much it struggled last night.

I think the BBC will be disappointed at the figures this September. The car crash and Ronnie's return were trailed and hyped but if anything it fell further behind the competition which is surprising and I don't think they expected it.

I wonder if Emmerdale is actually benefiting more from the nights drawing in as it's on earlier?
There's only half an hour in difference, and surely if these people wanted to watch they would just turn over at 7.30. to me Coronation St and Eastenders have the advantage of a later time start, as even at 7pm many people are not home or only just getting in from work.

Thanks for that rzt! 2010 was a massive year for EastEnders - interesting how it held on to most of its 2010 audience in 2011 but since then it's just been going downhill. Corrie pretty consistent since 2008, great to see it rise on last year.

Out of interest, do you have the full year averages for Corrie/EE? It would be interesting to see how much they rise with the winter months added in and it would give a clearer picture as to where EastEnders is heading. Looking at some of the recent overnights I think 2014 may be an extremely depressing year for EE unless it's really turned around.

Interesting about the 2007-2009 EE/Emmerdale clash. I wonder if ITV would do something like that again now that ED is pretty strong and EE weak, maybe make the Thursday episode 60 minutes long instead of 2x 30 minutes?

True - but it's been painted here during the summer that EastEnders figures would rise once it got darker. Emmerdale is on earlier so maybe the darker nights are actually benefiting ED more than EE and widening the gap.

I think they go up in general in winter, just like they often slump in summer, but I think that all of the programmes will be benefitting from that, not just Emmerdale.

Thanks rzt, very interesting.

Some interesting facts.....
7.45m last Tuesday was Emmerdale's highest overnight rating since Mon 4th February (7.5m) and highest Tuesday night rating of the year!

Corrie's 9.06m on 9th Sept was its highest since the Mon of BGT week (9.47m) and 8.85m was its highest Friday rating since 29th March. (9.59m)

EastEnders still hasn't managed to beat the 7.18m it got for Tanya's exit back in June.

Highest soap overnights 2013:

Coronation Street:
1. 10.34m (21/1)
2. 10.27m (18/3)
3. 10.12m (25/3)
4. 10.09m (21/1)
5. 9.9m (18/3)

EastEnders:
1. 9.09m (1/1)
2. 8.77m (14/1)
3. 8.77m (21/1)
4. 8.76m (18/1)
5. 8.68m (3/1 & 7/1)

Emmerdale:
1. 7.8m (10/1)
2. 7.8m (18/1)
3. 7.79m (14/1)
4. 7.77m (16/1)
5. 7.75m (21/1)

Coronation Street:
Mon: 9.64m (+580k) / 9.56m (+740k)
Wed: 9.65m (+1.2m)
Fri: 9.81m (+1.06m) / 10.05m (+1.2m)

EastEnders:
Mon: 7.91m (+870k)
Tue: 6.33m **
Wed: 7.43m (+810k)
Thurs: 7.63m (+970k)
Fri: 7.82m (+990k)

Emmerdale:
Fri: 7.71m (+780k)

No HD for other episodes

Surely that episode for Corrie timeshifted more than that, the Sunday episode had 6.65mllion so in fact it timeshifted 1.44million
The Barb week starts on a Monday so that figure was for the 2nd Sunday episode which got 7.42m in the overnights.

I'm intrigued to see how EastEnders does come January. Ratings are usually sky high at that time.

EastEnders didn't timeshift much at all last week. Interesting timeshift for Friday though.

Good for Corrie.

2011- 9.02m (-4%)
2012- 8.23m (-9%)
The previous DTC years (06-10) there was a small decrease in 07 and 08 before it held firm in 09 nd an increase in 2010. This must be why they want him as producer.

And remember that small decrease in 2007 and 8 was partially down to clashing with Emmerdale one episode a week. The 2007-2010 Santer,DTC era was very successful. They reinvigorated the show. Most of the decline is natural due to there being more channels but in recent years the show has obviously been struggling.

DTC has a big job and it's not certain he will be able to pull it off but if the past is anything to go by he will do very well. Him being a life long fan helps I think.

Ratings for last night:

Corrie (7:30pm): 8.13m (40%) / 8.32m (40.9%)
Corrie (8:30pm): 7.87m (33.8%)
Emmerdale: 6.57m (35.0%) / 6.71m (35.8%)

EastEnders: 6.07m (27.9%), +2.5: 304k (2.1%)

Doctors: 1.31m (20.0%)

I wonder how Emmerdale & Corrie will fare during their big week in a few weeks time. Could an episode of one of them break 10m?

It depends what viewing figures are like as a whole and if it's promoted properly, I hope so as it's not very common for soaps to hit 10m in the autumn surprisingly apart from at Christmas. It's usually January or maybe a little later if there's something big going on.

Emmerdale needed 41% on Monday to break 8m and the second Corrie episode needed 42% to break 10m.

If only it snows. It'll have to be heavily trailed, of course.

Corrie has broken 10m about 3 times this year, all on snow days.

Out on it's own, stranded and going nowhere. My god what a terrible year it's been. The Friday Ep is now stupidly low, the rest of the week was just low.

I don't know how their going to fix this one?? I think moving the Friday ep to Wednesday would be a start. This I think could be a temporary measure while EE gets it's self together.

But the reason it's lost so many viewers is it's been so dull, nothing much happening and the viewers were already alienated but the shit that Kirkwood had given us, at least he gave us something.

Horrific for EastEnders and no excuses can be pulled out now. People are bored so are switching off.

I get so fed up of this. Dan is a fine member and his posts on EastEnders this year has actually been rather critical (and understandably so). I haven't seen him ever defend EE in a desperate bid to make the show look better and believe me when I think of the lot who make excuses, I never think of him. He gets unfairly slated on here for it and it's infuriating now.

Anyway, just had a look through various soap ratings and here's how they compare in comparison to equivalent points:

2009:

19.30 Corrie - 7.94m (38.9%); + 0.19m, 1.1%
20.30 Corrie - 7.86m (38.9%); + 0.01m, - 6.1%
19.00 ED - 6.31m (33.5%); + 0.26m, 1.5%
20.00 EE - 7.8m (36.6%); - 1.73m, 8.7%

Everything else is up, EE down substantially.

Come on, Lola was joking, not slating. Dan is indeed a fine poster - I don't even watch EE any more, but I still look out for and enjoy his posts. He has indeed been relatively critical in recent times, but I don't think he would deny being somewhat of a SuperFan, nor should he.

It's a pity Dan is not working at EE, he has a passion for the show that has been lacking from the team at Elstree for a few years now.
