How much radio play do you think G4 would get?

If G4 win, and they have as much chance as anyone else, do you think their single will get much radio play? I can't imagine Radio One playing it at all, and their 'unique' style doesn't fit in with what's being played on independent radio right now (Britney, Christina, Justin etc.)

I have absolutely nothing against the guys, and I admit they do have talent, but if they released 'Everybody Hurts' as a single, I think I'd tire of hearing it pretty quick (that's if they play it anyway)

Hopefully no air time, sorry guys, yeah you have talent but on a musical stage in the west end. I personally dont like listening to them its too much, too loud and their voice seem conflict with each other - i hate to say it but i actually find myself fliching. And whats with all this about Jonathon being sexy - i must be missing something??

I can see them getting MOR airplay, and Radio 2 has a pretty good market share these days. It may not be enough to make them superstars, but between that and touring, I think their future is already guaranteed.

The only problem for me is that I hate what they do. They know that their pseudo-classic approach will win popularity in some quarters and so have sold out. This sort of classical-popular cross-over is so rarely beautiful, and G4 bring surprisingly little to the party.

I'd rather hear them sing what they were trained to sing.

It’s strange that people are madly fixated with the winner of X-factor having to get Radio 1 or commercial pop radio airplay. In fact, although R1 gets approx. 7 million listeners, R2 gets almost double that figure, with Classic FM being the most listened to commercial national radio station in the country with something like 6.5 million listeners. That’s a vast audience to tap into, and G4, whatever your personal taste, have a ready audience who would buy their album for Valentine’s Day. The other factor is that, like Jamie Cullum, Joss Stone, there is a potential worldwide and US market for these guys, and these territories don’t give a shit whether they won or lost a TV talent show.

The classical charts, whilst separate, demonstrate the buying power of the older, classically inclined consumer – acts sell lower volumes but at a sustained rate for much longer periods of time. I would guess that the Classical charts would ban G4, just as they did to Bond (the all-girl string quartet) for sounding to ‘pop’, but it wouldn’t stop that demograph from buying the album.

I think too many people are thinking that X-factor means Pop Idol with a new look. I'm not so sure that it does. IMO the X-factor is whatever gives an act staying power and that doesn't necessarily mean an act that will sell a Number 1 record. Why should airplay on Radio 1 be more important that airplay on Radio 2. I'm not a listener of either station but I'd guess that Radio 2 plays more artists with my idea of the X-factor than Radio 1 does.

Most performers on FA & PI haven't had the X-factor. Those who have it are still around whether or not they won.

I'm certainly not 'madly fixated with the winner of X-factor having to get Radio 1 or commercial pop radio airplay'. However, I guess what I'm saying is that the I imagine the majority of viewers of a show like X-Factor are Radio 1 / pop radio listeners, rather than Radio 2 / Classic FM listeners

If G4 continue to release pop covers, are these likely to fit into ANY radio playlist?

Excellent post. I dont care one bit if Radio One dont play any G4 records. They have never been that kind to most reality tv talent show contestants and have given very little airtime to them. There is a huge ready-made audience out there for the type of music that G4 do and I can see them having long-term success too.

I enjoy watching X-Factor, Pop Idol and Fame Academy, but you couldn't drag me to Radio One these days. I much prefer Radio Two or local radio.

Any respectable radio station would play what the listeners want to hear - and they obviously want to hear G4.

Well that kinda depends what the release why would they release a pop song the aint pop and if they release a classic i think they will go top of the classic charts and what difference does it make which chart they suld be top of both anyway. I think they will stick with classic in the end as that is what they are n what I would want them to be, maybe with some lighter pop as well, not all pop though that wuld be boring and they aint boring

g4 would be beter at touring like tina turner, shirley basey and so on as they don't get airplay puut have a vast fanbase.
tina turner broke concert audience records worlwide and her music is not mainstream pop.

Dizzie's right, the UK classical music industry is huge. It will be interesting to see how well Il Divo do to start off with.

I just think it's sad that these skilled people who have trained all their lives to be great singers have now decided to attempt to popularise themselves by singing weak versions of old pop songs.

I honestly think I, and thousands of others, would be more enraptured to hear them singing real male quartet music, or adaptations of traditional tunes.

If done with some humour, there is success to be had. I think of the King's Singers, who never really let go of their roots, and yet got loads of TV coverage by singing in other light entertainment shows.

However - forget all of what I have just said in the short term. On a show like X-Factor, if the sex appeal is handled correctly, and the music is less than vile, massive numbers of people attracted by their boyish good looks will vote for them.

I would not be surprised if they win, and, who knows? After a flurry of stardom for a few months, they should be able to tour forever and play to packed houses.

I don't think radio has the capacity to impact negatively on their careers, but Radio 2 and Classic FM could impact very positively.
