Traveling in India -Sim options?
The Lord Lucan
26-01-2012
What are my options traveling abroad coverage/phone/cost wise in India. Mostly Dehli. 10-14 days.

Vodafone & Orange who I'm currently with are hugely expensive and data wise it's ridiculous.

Is there a sim that allows calls and data roaming worldwide that anyone can recommend? I've looked at a few forums that say its difficult to get a local PAYG sim in india with some new restrictions after the Mumbai attacks... Anyone tried it this way?

There is Truphone, but I've just looked at the India rates and they're £6 per MB, so probably no better than what you have.

Make sure your phone is unlocked and buy a payg sim out there, they have lots to choose from and the prices are cheaper than anything you'll take from the UK.

Try http://www.indiamike.com/india/
You may also like to get a USB battery pack type thing.. If you plan to use the data for maps.... http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Trent-Du...369226&sr=8-10

If your using a contract sim in your unlocked iphone, take it out, and repalce it with a UK pay as you go one before you go, i think vodafone offer a UK pay as you go sim that charges £2.50 for up to 25mb of data per day in Europe, and £5.00 for the same amount elsewhere.
As the iphone uses a micro sim, it may also be worth while investing in a sim card cutter, and a sim card adaptor, then you can use your current sim card in a normal non smart phone, if you need to stay in touch via voice/text.
when you get to your destination, you can then use any local pay as you go sim card, with the sim card trimmer/cutter that will then allow you to put that sim in your micro sim slot.

Best option is to get a local sim while you're there. Data is comparatively cheap.
