Elderly Cat - Diet Advice needed
Patchoui

My 15yr old cat has always been a frequent vomiter. He was seen by the vet a year ago, had some blood tests, a general health check, was given a clean bill of health and prescribed prednisolone on a regular basis.

Recently, he started lip smacking and licking so I switched his diet from Whiskas wet pouches and Purina dry food to Applaws wet and dry food together with some cooked fresh chicken to reduce the amount of additives and cereal in his food. He has not vomited since the change and the lip smacking has stopped.

However, over the last couple of days his thirst has increased, he drank a whole bowl of water over night and today he is visiting his water bowl every 10 minutes. He hasn't eaten today.

Have I done something wrong? Should I put him back on his old diet?

I wouldn't panic too much, a change in the diet is going to cause a change in behavior especially if she is eating more of the dry food she will drink more. I suggest you give your vets a quick ring and they will hopefully put your mind at ease.

(Btw, I used to work in a kennels and cattery, and a lot of the animals with frequent vomiting were fed on Clinivet which has no additives, gluten, and other stuff I can't quite remember, you can buy it online)

As he is drinking quite a lot more it may be worth ringing the vet, as pugamo has already said, just in case. You may get some valuable advice about his diet as well, good luck.

Thanks pugamo, the Clinivet food sounds good and I'll get hold of some. He has been enjoying a lot of the dry food and I'm hoping this is the reason, but for a cat that hardly ever drinks he has now drunk 2 bowls of water since yesterday. Soapoholic I'll monitor things for today and then contact my vet for advice.

I would take him to the vets PDQ. He sounds like he might be developing a significant health problems, and the sooner he gets that checked the better.

Any sudden change in water consumption needs to be checked out ASAP as it can be a sign of a serious health problem like diabetes or kidney problems.
