Bbc Hd Video Late / Audio Late?

On the BBC HD channel, during the day demos, we have a thing with a hammer and the words VIDEO LATE / AUDIO LATE.
What does this mean?

Not seen it myself but it sounds like it a test demo so you can adjust the audio delay.

It's a Dolby Digital lip synch check.
