The only downside used to be the price (and perhaps weight and power consumption).
Plasma screen do tend to be larger - 42" + - while LCD tend to be best in smaller sizes. In that way I suppose Plasma can be considered more extravagant, though they are not too expnsive these days.”
Yea its just peoples expectations are lagging behind the technology, it wasn't that long ago that 50" of display in your home was pretty much unthinkable, cost and space and the rest.

But the crt one takes up so much space”
Mounted on a wall they make all the difference in saving space, 42+ makes less intrusion in a room than even a 27" crt, the furniture to carry the tv just wastes a lot of space.

Yea I hate it when people mount it up that high, its just stupid. Tv should be at eye level, the only way to make a mantle piece mount work is to get a motorized lowering mount designed specifically for that purpose, and those cost thousands. I've had friends get around it by just pretty much blocking off the fireplace with the tv, mounting it at eye level with masonary bolts, that works if you don't care about using your fireplace.
