Is a plasma TV still the sign of extravagance ?

^^^ This. You can get sub 40" LCD TV dirt cheap, probably cheaper then the cheapest smaller screen plasmas. And at the higher end you can get some very expensive plasma units.

There are plasma TV's aound the £400-500 mark that will give a better picture than any LCD in that range by a long way.

You could say this about ones in the £500-£1000 mark too. Like the 42" Panasonic GT30
