Not the case with all cats. My cats wake me up even when their bowls are filled with food. I think some cats sense their owner's everyday routine. My neighbour had a cat who seemed to know when she would arrive home and every evening at around 6pm he would sit on the spot she parked her car and she arrived soon after.

My Bernard does that, but it's after 8pm. I worry when he's not there to greet my car.

My Tabitha used to wake me up if I slept late but she normally had food available plus a cat flap to get outside so I think she just liked me to keep to my normal routine. Cats are creatures of routine and habit.

My 13 year old does this. She jumps onto the bedside table, meows to me, I stroke her, she comes and sits on me and we cuddle, then 5 minutes later my alarm goes off. Everyday without fail.

My cat Muppet used to do that. The trouble was he would also wake me up on my days off as well. And as others have said, he didn't need feeding (he ate dried food so always had biscuits down).

Unfortunately little Archie (my kitten) hasn't got the hang of it yet, he woke me up at 3am this morning by snuggling up to me and purring in my ear - what a nice way to wake up, even if it was too early.

A friend who was going round to my house whilst I was holiday was amazed that my little fatty would come home at 5.30pm on the dot. He didn't think cats were that intelligent Either did I actually (first cat I've ever had having only ever had dogs before) but she does have a bit of a brain along with all that fluff as well

As for getting woken up in the morning by here - only ever for food or for a cuddle as she'll wake me up at 5am (don't need to wake up until 6.30am the little blighter!).

My cat wakes me up between 3am and 5am, but at 6pm every day, come rain come shine, he wants his dinner dammit! His internal dinner gong always impresses visitors.

Bless. I used to have a cat that was an alarm clock.
The ones I have now do not stir, lazy lot (gorgeous with it though).

My Simba is like that! He used to sit by the gate when I got in from school! And if I was ever late he'd be looking all concerned

One of ours jumps on the bed when the heating comes on in the morning (about an hour before we get up). But she then settles down and waits for the alarm.

I open one eye to check the time and think "oh great, another hour yet"!

At weekends though she can be a devil, if we keep her waiting for too long.

She'll keep jumping from the windowsill on to the bed and back again and finally (always works) she uses the bed as a scratch-post!

My cat wakes me up by head butting me and purring loudly. Unfortunately at weekends he also does this at the time the alarm goes off on weekdays.

Well of course, cats are like the Dowager in Downton Abbey....'what's a weekend?'

When my brother's alarm clock goes off and he pushes snooze the dog will time him and if he doesn't get up he's on top of him licking him. He's saved his day several times!

I started a new job this morning. You should have seen the filthy look I got when the alarm went off at 7.30a.m. For the last 5 months I haven't had to get up in the mornings so my cat has had a lie in with me. Only another 5 weeks before we go back to our old routine.

But not so good as to leave you in bed and go off and do the work himself, though.

My cat wakes me up each morning, always about 6.30 ish - don't need an alarm clock with a hungry furry beastie in the house. I like to think he wakes me because he loves me - I guess he does as I'm the one that fills the food dish!

My cat used to come wake me up before my alarm went off. Now so much now.

Our cat does if we have a lie in. She jumps up on the bed and does her best to indicate it's time to go down stairs.

I love that, it's very funny. I think cats do have a sense of timing, and they do like to share in their human's activities, in their own little way.

If I sleep past a certain time...usually 9am, my little cat Pixie will wake me up by tapping me on the nose
