fingers crossed i've pre-empted this as i've just switched my dongle over to my laptop and it's bloody slow tonight on that too.
Am loving all the free books I can read on my new tablet, although i think it will frustrate me too much if i use it for any long emails as it's so slow to type anything.

Depends on the tablets, I know for personal experience that my iPad 2 is very fast, everything opens instantly.

As for flash, there's an app for that

oh ffs why do i never have any luck with electronic gadgets? I managed to connect with the three dongle earlier, although it was slow. Now when I put it into the usb port on my tablet nothing happens. No light on the dongle at all, yet it works on my laptop.

I just know that when i take it back to exchange at Curry's they will insist on sending it off to be checked rather than giving me a replacement too

Flash is only decent for video whilst flash games really need a fast PC. Most of the stuff on tablets are extremly simple web apps and games so they feel fast.
Its why 99p type apps are so dominant.

This is probably why even Google have pulled flash support from android.

Flash and silver light are 2 formats I try and avoid!

The main problem is that most Flash games are written for PC's that have graphics cards many times faster than that on a tablet.
If it was written in Flash especially for a very slow GPU then it could work. Steve Jobs new full well the perception of tablets would be lowered by allowing comparisons like this so he made a very smart business decision.

Flash works perfectly well on my desire hd. Its over a year old hardware and does flash pretty well indeed. Flash still has a job to do. A lot of Flash content still knocking around the web and will continue to do so for a while, until HTML 5 becomes the standard.

erm. Isnt it Flash that have pulled support from mobile ?

..... and no tablets "arent slow". Its like anything. cheap tablets will (often) be slower than premium ones .... in the same way a Ford Focus isnt as quick as a Porsche .....

But most people use a tablet for simple things, which dont need Porsche like speed. Reading ebooks, listening to music, browsing the web ..... none of these need huge amount of power. Nor do playing games that are designed for tablets.

Flash games, however, are very processor intensive. Just bought by kids mid-range netbooks and they struggle with Farmville too.

so to say that tablets are very slow because they cant run something very quickly that they are really designed to run is a little harsh

You get what you pay for. I'm sure a Samsung Galaxy Tab or a Motorola Xoom would have performed better.

I think people forget that a tablet (yes even the 'mighty' ipad) IS basically a big phone. So in the same way a Galaxy S2 is quicker than a Widlfire there will be differences in tablet speed.

I have an ASUS Transformer and its very quick for everything i need a tablet for ...... would i expect it to handle flash games as well as my high end laptop ??? obviously not .....

but is my laptop as portable ? no. Does the battery on my laptop last as long ? no. Does my laptop have easy control using touchscreen ? no.

Sorry, going to disagree. There are counter-examples to everything you have said. Most of these tablets are WiFi and cannot make phone calls. In what way is the Samsung 700T a "big phone"? It runs Windows 7 and has no cellular radio. Similar for the Acer W500 and HP Slate 2.

Your comparison of SGS2 versus Wildfire agrees with my previous post - you get what you pay for. But that is just as true for computers as it is for mobile phones.

There are plenty of portable laptops - the Macbook Air, Samsung Series 9, most ultrabooks etc. Is a 10" tablet really much more portable than these 11" laptops or a 10" netbook? A number of laptops can have battery competitive with tablets and even outperforming tablets once you add the battery slice.

Laptops with touchscreens - coming this year, a couple were demo'ed at CES.

Mate, with a limited view of the market, it's all very well to make these statements. But when you know what you're talking about, it's just as simple as a) a device exists for most combinations of preferences and b) you get what you pay for.

If you put in a laptop battery you get a hour battery for a tablet. It is certainly a size and cost thing why they don't. In business use it is easy to forsee a Transformer type becoming popular with one keyboard dock for the office and one for the home.

A main problem for Intel is that the low power Atom chipset became 'the netbook'. Intel have been anti-Atom making sure it does not impact on the big profit higher wattage Core chipsets. Would tablets have been as popular if quality 11.6" netbooks had become the norm?

Some popular PC flash based games have dedicated app versions for mobiles/tablets to improve performance. Not sure about Farmville for Android, but it does exist on some other platforms, even without Flash.

As Stuard said, Google never pulled long term Flash support, Adobe did!

Adobe need to make a living and obviously got bullied into taking a different long term global strategy.

lol..... sheesh

99% of CURRENT tablets are pretty much big phones...... often without the cellular side but the concept is the same. Same OS, similar hardware, just bigger screens.

iOS and Android were designed for the phone market. Tablets were an evolution.

and your expert knowledge may have missed the fact that you can already get touchsceen netbooks etc.

laptops and netbooks are aimed at a different market and style of use that tablets...... i could show you a £400 laptop that will open 3 concurrent video apps showing divx video - can a more expensive android/ios tablet do that ? or open 5 apps all on the same screen (although this is currently WIP on Android) ?

if you are going to get smart then think your arguments through. you dont always get what you pay for.

My point is that it is pointless to say what the average tablet does. You can find a tablet to meet your needs. And yes, the Samsung 700T could open 3 concurrent videos, not sure why it has to be an Android or iOS one. The 700T is available to buy now, that's all one needs to know.

It comes back to the OP saying they bought tablet X with expectations Y. You can't expect a netbook to run rings around an ultraportable or a Ford Mondeo to run rings around a BMW M5.

The 5 inch tablets are obviously part phone part tablet so work as both.
Larger tablets seem to have the always on phone calling part of the kernel removed so even with a suitable dongle would probably not work.
If 5" becomes a popular phone standard then we are certain to get more full featured 7" tablets.

Usefully, having decent batteries they last many days on standby

I got the Archos 101 for Christmas and 'swapped' it 4 days later for a Motorola Xoom, I just couldn't use it, way too slow, the lag was terrible and most games including Angry Birds just crashed out. The Xoom is fast as you like though
