iPhone 3GS thinks the headphones are in.

As the title says. Can't make calls, no ringer, no music unless I put headphones in.
This seems like a common problem, from what I've read online plugging the headphones in a few times works but not for me.
Anyone any ideas?

I'll try to answer as many potential questions as I can..

* I've tried plugging earphones in several times
* No I haven;t just updated the software
* The earphones haven't even been in today
* I've tried turning it on and off normall and also by holding both buttons down.

EDIT: When I say I can't make calls I mean without the headphones. I tested using my voicemail.. can listen using earphones and can hear sound when I put it on speaker phone.
I used the phone about an hour before I noticed the problem to make a phone call so it was fine. I didn't dp anything else with the phone so I am baffled!

are you sure the bottom part of the headphone socket hasn't broken off and is still in the bottom of the socket?

i've seen this on one iphone and it wasn't noticed until we had a closer look at the headphone jack and noticed the tip was missing.

other than that, have you blown into the socket to see if anything is in there that might cause it to think the headphones are in?

it's unlikely to be a software issue, and more likely to be a physical hardware issue.

My headphones aren't broken I've just checked now. As I said it suddenly happened so if that was the case the problem would of occured earlier I would of thought.

I'm gonna plug the phone into the laptop now anyway and see if updating does anything.

To whatever the next update is. I don't update the software too often.

Yeah, that's the one. Not sure what version I already have but it's not that. I don't really take notice I just update when I'm not in a rush.

If I don't get it solved I guess I'll have to take it to one of those dodgy "we jailbreak your phone" shops lol. Apple will charge a fortune just to look at it I would imagine, plus I'm not sure where my nearest official place is that will look at it.

I can't take it to O2 because I bought the phone seperate to get a cheaper sim only contract.

as it's a 3GS i assume it'll be well out of warranty anyway.

if you go to the genius bar at an apple store, they will look at it for free and then suggest how to proceed from there. they won't repair it for free though unless under warranty.

I've just remembered why I don't have the latest software. Error 3194. Not too fussed about that, need to get the main problem sorted.

There are surprisingly no Genius stores near me! I live in Huddersfield so I didn't expect one in a town like this but I expected one in Leeds.

I'd have to go to Sheffield or Manchester which is just out of the question.

I had that in my old iPhone 3G, I used a can of compressed air in the headphone socket and it fixed it.

No I don't have a jailbroken phone, because to be honest I don't know what that does, I just know it probably either illegal or has other complications. So I've never looked into the benefits of getting that done.

The problem may have come from a few months ago. I was updating my phone when my laptop crashed and my iphone wouldn't turn on, I just had the itunes logo on my phone. I spent hours trying to fix it, manually downloading previous software versions etc until I finally sorted it.

Anyway, I reset my phone a few more times since the last post and the problem now seems to be fixed.
So thanks so much for taking the time to constantly replying to me, I've probably wasted your time so I apologise but thanks again, very much appreciated.
