Just retried them all as follows. Nokia N8 Using CNLAB Speedtest. Not the best App but the only one avaliable so I'd advise these as useable for comparison only! All taken on the same phone within about 10 mins:

O2 Test is provided via my GiffGaff SIM. 3 is from my Brother's 3 AYCE One Plan SIM in my phone. Orange & T-Mob speeds from an Orange PAYG SIM I've topped up to use as a test mule.

O2: 4.8Meg
3: 3.7Meg
Orange: 1.8Meg
T-Mobile: 0.9Meg

Closest Site: 3/T-Mobile share, can see it out of my window, less than 1km.
Next is Orange, about 3km, then O2 at nearly 5km.

Problem with O2 here is we suffer when there's cell breathing going on, if it's busy, us on the edge get dumped!

Oh and to fill in the blank, Vodafone don't have 3G coverage here. Or anywhere in the area!

Closest mast is the O2 one, i used a GiffGaff sim do they restrict or not allow use of UTMS900?

Pretty good!! Also yes giffgaff can use UMTS900 but you have no way of telling if its using it or not so its just pot luck as to whether it will be UMTS900 or not.

I think keeping GG off 3G900 would be prohibitively expensive and basically pointless!

Have you tried roaming onto Orange T-Mobile and seeing what they give you?”

Was in Engand mate so wanted to wait until I got home to try, hence the late reply. I had 3G earlier and on Orange I got:

Ping: 391 ms
D/L: 0.86 Mbps
U/L: 0.24 Mbps

On Orange T-Mobile I got:

Ping: 137 ms
D/L: 0.97 Mbps
U/L: 1.08 Mbps

Not great for either network!!

Can all Orange customers who feel they have been capped at 1.8 please test speeds to see if they have changed anything.

In Belfast...

Orange:

Ping - 391ms
D/L - 0.86Mbps
U/L - 0.24Mbps

Orange T-Mobile:

Ping - 137ms
D/L - 0.97Mbps
U/L - 1.08Mbps

Totally crap for 3G speeds and I have GPRS Premium on my account!

Don't feel I have been capped but still have that PAYG SIM about so retested. It is peak time now granted, but things have got worse!

Orange: 300k Av. down and up, worst test was 12k down/9k up

T-Mobile: 300k Av. down, 500k up. Worse was 9k down, 30k up.
