I saw a bit of the German year-long BB whilst on holiday (in Cyprus - go figure?!?) and at the time they had a divide up (as in BB3). As neither myself nor my fiance speak German we couldn't understand a word that was said, but as a BB addict of course I had to watch it anyway
(it fitted in quite nicely whilst we were getting ready to go out to dinner
), but from the visuals it seemed much more laid back and slower event wise than our BB. Relationships seemed to be being developed properly rather than in the rushed way a ten week show must make them happen and there weren't so many big dramas. That said there were still dramas.
I don't think a year long show would be feasable in the UK due to the cost input we are used to - they would have to dramatically cut back on cameras etc (this was very evident in the german show) and the "specials", the weekday summary shows, psychology shows, etc. but I can see from watching it that it creats a more "real" environment, more "real" relationships, and less opportunity for HMs to play up to the cameras - they just can't over a long period. It was definitely less pressured. But is that what we want?
Personally I think we love seeing the HM's put under pressure to "achieve", to work the audience, to pass the weekly tasks, to develop relationships and bonds quickly in a way no-one would do normally. It is a totally different show having it over a longer period - still as interesting, but not what we know as Big Brother.
