VHS to DVD recorder?

Can anyone recommend a low priced VHS/DVD combo machine (with NTSC playback) that enables you to transfer you VHS tapes to DVD? Ideally would like to keep it under £100.

What specs?

Do you need one that upscales the picture quality of the vids?

Do you need one that copies NTSC vids as well as PAL?

If anyone knows a cheap machine that does both I'd like to know as well!

I've seen a few upscaling VHS DVD recorder combos (that don't do NTSC) around but they seem to be about £200.

The only Combi I have any experience of is the
Panasonic DMR-EZ49VEBK and it is way over your budget.

Have you tried looking on Gumtree for a preloved?

A combi will be 50% useless when you've finished transferring your tapes. Better to get a stand alone machine instead.

you don't mean dubbing pre-recorded VHS do you?

some may copy, but many won't.

Upscaling would be nice but mainly it needs to do NTSC as well as some of them are tapes from the states. The tapes are all TV shows taped off the TV or home movies on VHS. Not looking to copy pre-recorded stuff. I appreciate that once I've converted all the tapes its pretty much useless, but I was thinking that I could then sell it.

I looked into getting someone to do the tapes and a quicl google seems to suggest about £9 an hour which is just crazy. I was tempted to try and buy a 2nd hand VCR and then get some type of VHS to PC kit/software, but then there is the hassle of sourcing the VCR (and ensuring NTSC playback) and getting the right software. Seen lots of PC converter software over the years but each time I've looked at reviews they seem to be patchy with some buyers giving 5 stars and others giving 1 star and suggesting quality is terrible and therefore I've always been a bit reluctant to go down that route.

Don't waste your time with a combi or try copying to a PC.
Doubtful that any combi will copy NTSC tapes to dvd as a UK VCR will output NTSC as PAL60 rather than pure NTSC and most dvd recorders will only record a pure NTSC signal.

Philips and Pioneer will record PAL60.

Your safest bet is to buy a second hand Philips or preferably Pioneer recorder and get a used Panasonic VCR and connect them via scart.
Do not buy a Panasonic dvd recorder as they don't accept PAL60 .

I'll do them for you at £6 per hour including the blank dvd's. If interested PM me

I have Pioneer dvdr/hdd and Panasonic VCR. ( and a VHS-C adapter too for home tapes if needed)

I bought a PC converter software kit off ebay, but no one could get it to work (that's not to say it wouldn't but we're not techy enough).
I just wanted to convert some old home tapes to my PC or even straight to dvd would do.
Which combi vhs/dvd recorder could I get away with buying?

Something like THIS?
Or, something cheaper like THIS?
I used something similar to the second one. It worked. Good luck.

Wow, thanks for that. Never knew anything like the 1st 1 existed. The 2nd 1 is a version of what I bought and couldn't get to work, so for simpeton's like us I guess I should have tried not to be clever and paid out more in the 1st place. Cheers

Are you using windows 7 ? You may need to get more up to date drivers for that device.

I have this unit. It connects via firewire so no drivers needed and it shows up a DV-camcorder so works with any software that you can use for editing home movies. Also the conversion is done by the unit, not your PC so no need to worry about codecs or lip-sync issues. NTSC and PAL support. Of course you will need a VCR to playback with (I assume you have that already). Its not cheap but in this instance I believe you get what you pay for. You can always sell it after you have finished with it.

Mainly good I think. Seems problems were with PC's not machine....

Maplins have one for less. Here. Now compatible with W7

As I said, I used the the cheap £20 option. It wasn't straight forward and needed a little patience, but, got there in the end.
I only needed it for one tape (wedding) so gave it away after I used it.
