iPhone 4 Power / Lock Button is Stuck / Jammed - HELP!
Hi folks,
I'm 2 months out of warranty, and my iPhone's power/lock button is jammed. The display will still go to sleep after a while, but I can't turn the phone off (and I'm assuming that even if I could, I wouldn't be able to get it back on again either). I've booked an appointment with a Genius on Monday, but I've been looking around the net and there appears to be a lot of talk about this being a design/mechanical fault, rather than an issue of fair wear and tear. I have never dropped the phone, so I know that it's not something I've explicitly done. My phone network have advised me that because it's out of warranty (it would be nice if they told you when you signed up to a 27-month contract that this would be the case), I can either pay them £170 to replace it, or take my chances with Apple, who can repair it or swap it at their own prices. I'm loathe to spend any money at the end of January on something that's not technically my fault, so I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else has had similar problems - especially if yours failed out of warranty too, and how successful you've been in getting Apple to replace it at either a low cost or at no cost. Any help would be muuuuuch appreciated ![]() James |

If you are only a little out of warranty, Apple have been known to be very helpful in such circumstances. Your best bet is to see what they say.

![]() Ive managed to get many items fixed or replaced outside of warranty by just mentionning that ..... worth a try

There is no doubt that you are better going through Apple for this (as you are doing). What the previous two posters sounds good to me though. A friend of mine had their iPod touch replaced when one month out of warranty for a dodgy home button so hopefully you'll get similar treatment.

![]() In which case the OP should be approaching the retailer though I'd see what the genius does first as if they do do a repair it will be a lot quicker than any resolution with the retailer |

if they bought the phone from apple then yes they should do that. If they didn't then as the manufacturer they have no obligations under SOGA

Thanks for the responses.
I'm gonna try calling Orange tomorrow and having a bit of a whinge about it. To be perfectly honest, the faulty part probably cost less than £1 to make, so needing a complete replacement handset seems a little OTT. I'm loathe to fork out any money for something that should 'just' work though ... |

If you phone Orange and they agree to cover it the phone will be sent to Apple and you will be sent a new/reconditioned one back. They wont just replace the broken part. As you have the genius appointment already go and speak to them about it. As has been said they don't have to cover you under SOGA but likely they might replace it (as in my friends case) since Apple has such good customer service. You will also get it sorted there and then. Make sure you back up! |

Apple replaced my phone when it was 2 months out of warranty after the silent mode switch became faulty for free. Most likely your best bet
Orange will probably not replace it for free as you would have somewhere had a leaflet in the pack you get from them about Apple Care. At least every iPhone direct from Orange i've seen has had this leaflet. Worth a moan on the phone to try though

Well I called Apple support this morning ... they told me it's out of warranty and there's nothing directly they can do. Spoke to someone at Orange again, who advised that it'll definitely be £173 to swap the phone over for a replacement; but this will only have a 90-day warranty on it (the same as Apple would offer). Going to see the genius this afternoon -- will see what they say about it, but I'm guessing they won't just hand me a new phone, or crack her open and wiggle it around a bit. Hmm.

Hi,
I've taken out of warranty iphones & ipads back to the Apple Store. They usually a good look, "hum & hah" a bit then they'll tell you it'll cost £xxx to replace. When they pick you up off the floor, they usually say "but as a good will gesture, we'll do it free - just this once". This happened for my 18 month old iPad that was dropped by one of the kids & 2 iphones that had problems with volume. The main thing to remember is "If you don't ask, you don't get". |

Well I'm back, and not very happy to be honest.
They were totally disinterested ... as soon as I told them it was out of warranty I had two options: - Pay them £120 for a replacement phone, with a 90-day warranty; - Use the stupid assistive touch thingy if I want to turn it off; and plug it in to the mains to turn back on. I don't see either of these as being a reasonable solution to my problem. If you google the issue they return 3 million-plus results; so they know that they fail prematurely. I'm going to pursue it further with Orange. But I'm particularly disappointed with Apple's lack of concern - I have a MacBook Pro, 2 iPods, Time Capsule, AirPort, Apple TV and suchlike ... nice to see that my loyalty to the brand means nothing whatsoever. |

Sorry to read that.
I presume you pushed them quite hard about it before leaving? Said that any argument about warranty/condition should be had with Orange and not them. Fair enough I guess, but I didn't like how their mind was made up without even listening to what I had to say. Sent an e-mail to Orange, will keep this thread updated when I hear back from them. |

Why turn the phone off. Just use the home button to take it out of standby mode, and slide to unlock. If you don't want calls or anything, just put it in airplane mode.
Additionally, I've had iPhones from day one, and never had a power button jam or not work. It might be worth unscrewing it (follow the guides on you fixit) to see if something like a bit of fluff is jammed, thus causing it not to work. Might cost a tenner for the screwdriver and a spudger from the internet, but it's an option. M |

I tried to, but to be honest they were so dismissive and said that I had two options -- either I pay them £120 for a replacement, or they put on an assistive-touch thing which will at least let me shut it down. It's an annoying big dot that's permanently visible on the screen and lets me shut the phone off; but to turn it back on again I'd need to plug it into a wall socket. Hardly practical when you're heading to the gym or whatnot.

Call from Orange today ... to cut a long story short they're not entertaining that they're in any way responsible for ensuring that the phone would last me the duration of the contract.
I'll reiterate that I haven't ever dropped or damaged the phone. They have offered me 50% of the cost of getting it repaired at a mobile repair store (half of £50). I'm loathe to take them up on the offer, but bearing in mind I still have over 12 months left of my contract, I've got very few options. Anyone else having a problem like this, or anything similar, that they've managed to get resolved in a slightly more positive light? |

I'm not particulary surprised Orange wont cover full costs. Still think you might be better to pursue this with Apple a bit further.

Or just buy a new lock button from ebay and replace it yourself. You can get the parts for 5 or 6 quid and if you google around you can find step by step instructions quite easily.

Phone Apple.
I just did as i have an issue with my 4S with the battery losing about 2% a minute. They want a staggering £500 deposit PLUS £30 to have the phone exchanged! They were promptly told to shove it, so looks like i'll be ditching this thing very quickly! |

Ouch. Have you tried taking it to an Apple Store instead?
Also, sometimes a battery drain can seemingly be due to a dodgy sync. I've had it before on past phones, and have sorted it by uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, then re-syncing. Another option is a full-on restore. |
