Actually, Perri's story is quite interesting. She was a waitress who used her waitressing money to record songs at night. A friend of hers was a friend of the choreographer on the US show
So You Think You Can Dance and gave her the song. She used it on the programme and people started downloading it. Within 2 weeks, Perri had gone from an unknown waitress to a best-selling recording artist.
So, sure, she used a connection with someone in telly to get a platform for the song to appear but, from there on in, it was all the public liking her music. It was only after she had charted and appeared several times on daytime TV that she landed a recording contract. Which is fair enough, really. You can't criticise a record company for signing someone who's already in the charts, can you?
