Updating TV's and Blu-Ray Players

Hey guys,

I had never updated my systems before in my household until i recently remembered that you can do so on new HD TV's and Blu-Ray Players.

So ive got a few questions.

What are all these Software updates? Do they improve your television or blu-ray player?

Is there any way of seeing what the update is for like Apple does in which it details what is in the update.

Well i decided to go and update all the systems round the house and nothing looks different. Im presuming its updated it somehow.

One last thing, is there any way of keeping myself up to date with when the software updates are ready for my tv or blu-ray player. Do I physically need to go onto the companys website once in a while to check whether an update is ready?

Is there not a website out there that keeps you up to date every day if theres an update for all systems such as LG, Sony, Samsung, Philips all in one site?

Thanks
chrisjr

Most Freeview TVs can do Over the Air updates. But they won't do anything unless there is an actual update being transmitted. You can check for what updates are being transmitted on the DTG website.

Whether the manufacturers detail what is being updated is another matter. About the only one I know that does so consistently is Humax who make PVRs.

Blu Ray players tend to download over the internet. I have a Sony player and I have seen details of updates on their website in the Support section.

Most updates are to fix bugs or add new features. Especially for Blu Ray where the disks can sometimes have clever bits tacked on that some players can't cope with unless they get a software update.

Oh right, I see. Thanks for that.

Well one of the reasons that i decided to update my blu-ray player was because i tried to play a blu-ray disc and it was fine half way through, then it stated to fuzz and go slow and couldnt work out why it was doing that as i had played the disc the week earlier on my ps3 and it was fine!

So i decided to do the update today on my player and i re-played the disc and now it seems fine. So maybe thats what it needed. An update. Because i had never updated since i purchased it last May and the blu-ray i just bought had just been released.
