My father was always against having any pets in our house when Me and my brother were growing up (probably as he himself lost his dog as a kid and maybe didn't want us being heartbroken if it happened to a pet we had). About 2 years ago my brother split up with his girlfriend and came back to live at home and he asked our parents if he could bring his 2 cats until he gets another place, was only going to be temp for around 6 months but he eventually got a new house after about 9 months, he asked if we could keep the cats until he'd settled in which we did but our dad really took to Bobbie and Mowgli and they became a permanant fixture and I honestly can say if they weren't at home my dad would really miss them. He feeds them, Bobbie sleeps on his bed and lap, and he even plays with them and takes them to the vet if needed - we never thought we would ever see dad like this it's a miracle. My brother decided it would not be right now to move them as they are so at home and he only lives a 5min walk so always sees them.

That's really nice that your dad has taken to the cats so much that they now have a permanent home there!!
Love the name Mowgli by the way!!

I think some people are put off cats until they actually own them themselves. I know my Nana never really liked them (well not hate them, but wasn't fussed by them) until my mum owned them and then she realised that they were just like "little people" as she would say! As they each have their own personalities, which is so true!

I have 2 cats who will be 3 this year & i would honestly be completely & utterly lost without them.
I've been around cats since the day i was born & when i moved out of home i just knew that i had to get 2 cats, because i couldn't live in a house without them!

i think children miss out on so much if they don't have pets in the house.

My Dad is always the -insert swear word- cat's but he is the one that sits down and brushes them at night. They queue up patiently and wait their turn. When the nursing home my Mum worked in closed they had no where for the cat to go and my Mum was talking about taking him back to the RSPCA. Now he was a smelly tatty old fart who just slept all day and in all honesty he would not have been picked had he gone back to the RSPCA. My dad turned round and said she couldn't do that and she had to bring him home. They then had 5 cats my Dad was always cursing them but he is very fond of them.

You normally find that when a cat 'gets' to a man, they are wfar soppier with then than women is in many ways.

So pleased your Dad cudzndrips, has been wrapped round their paws

When my cousin died her husband talked about getting a dog for their 2 young children. A dog wouldn't have been practical so he eventually decided to get a cat for his then 10 year old daughter - he had always told me he didn't like cats. He quickly became completely besotted with the little kitten he acquired (unfortunately from a pet shop, but very healthy) and, more than 2 years on, the cat is an entrenched member of the family, sleeps on top of my cousin and even sometimes goes on long car journeys to the family caravan in Cornwall.

I know of several other men who professed to not liking cats but soon changed their minds when they moved in with their girlfriends who had cats. I think a lot of men make judgements about cats - but you need to live with cats to fully appreciate their funny, quirky little personalities.

i know this thread is about cats, I have cats, but don't live near enough for my Dad to get to know them.

We were never allowed cats or dogs when growing up, Dad hated dogs in particular (at the time he was a postman)

About 8 years ago, my sister got a cocker spaniel, Olly and Dad absolutely fell in love with her, when they visited, it was like - come on Olly, lets see what Grandad has got for you, and he would produce treats or toys that he had bought

Then she and her family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, and of course they took Olly with them. Two years later Dad went out to visit, and he was thrilled to bits that Olly remembered him.

unfortunately she became ill with cushings disease and died last May. Dad was almost in tears when he rang to tell me, she was such a lovely dog, it really got to him and to make matters worse, she died on his birthday
