Sky to Launch New Internet TV Service

Sky today announced plans to launch a new service allowing customers to watch some of its most popular content over the internet. Taking advantage of the rapid growth in broadband-connected devices, and building on Sky’s experience in multi-platform TV, the new service will
be an additional choice for people who don’t currently subscribe to a pay TV service.

In other words, SKY will buy the rights to nearly everthing to make it more hard work for Netflix to survive in the UK then charge over the odds to view it.

They aleady have (brought nearly everything). Sky own the exclusive/1st run VOD rights to most of 'the good stuff'.

I still don't get what will set this new service from Sky apart from Sky Go, which Netflix has already stated is their biggest rival. Is it just going to be a rebranded version? i.e. exactly the same as when they changed it from Sky Player and made a few changes. This just looks like a desperate attention seeking PR exercise now the spotlight is not on them.

Sky might have a lot of the movie rights sewn up (something which pretty much constitutes a monopoly and shouldn't be allowed in my eyes) as well as an undeniably strong roster of sports content, but in TV I would say Netflix could give them a serious run for their money, especially with Netflix exclusive content on the way like House of Cards and New Arrested Development.

Hopefully UK consumers will see past Sky's spoiler tactics, don't pay over the odds for this service, and don't let them dominate in another area of the market. Camp Netflix all the way!

I'm not particulary fond of Sky so I will be sticking with Netflix for the forceable future.
Who knows what the future holds, but I guess at the end of the day it will be all down to content, how much it costs and which devices these services will support.
At the mo ive got Netflix and can get Lovefilm if I want it. So unless Sky support the devices I already have then it deffinatetly wouldn't be an option for some time anyway.

I don't think netflix will be that big in the UK, there's not alot of choice and I doubt there ever will be and the quality of the stream is not right, I can't put my finger on it but it just doesn't look right, it makes me feel abit queasy, Lovefilm on the other hand doesn't.

sounds like theyll morph all the sky one programming etc onto sky go

if they did that sky would wipe netflix out

to have all of skys movies and programmes on a VOD service would be unbeatable

Lovefilm in SD doesn't make you queasy but Netflix in HD does?

Depends on how much it costs.

I can't see a month's subscription to Sky Streaming Movies costing anything less than what a Sky TV customer would pay for the Sky Movies package.

Look what happened when Sky content ended up on the Xbox 360 - that content was the same price as a Sky TV customer would pay via their Sky box.

More on this today

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17458199

"Sky has revealed more details of its new internet TV service, which is to be called NowTV.

Customers, who do not have to be Sky subscribers, can access content on a pay-as-you-go or contract basis.

The service's initial offering will be limited to films, with sport and entertainment programmes added in due course, the company said."

It is a shrewd move for all those people who just dont like anything Murdoch related, many of them will find out too late that NowTV is a Murdoch company and will have signed up. But I guess it is a contract free PAYG solution, they wont have spent too much.

This is not good news. They are extending their monopoly. I dislike Sky and this is just another step to consolidate their position of high prices. Netflix should be worried.

Why? Nothing has actually changed.

Netflix were already worried because Sky already had done the VOD content deals, long before now.

On a global basis, Now TV is the least of Netflix's worries.
