noticed a channel called Racing UK up at 114 or something. when i switch to it literally nothing comes up.

anyone know what's afoot?

me old man is really in to racing so i'd like to find out.

does sound like it might be a clue yes. maybe it's one of them freeview IP channels.

it seems the channel is £20 a month (or just £240 if you subscribe annually,) i can't see him doing that...

Should be cheaper if you commit to a year?

There may be a free month or some deals if it launches through Freeview/YouView etc.

116 is in the new group starting at 110 for IPTV services - probably in advance of the launch of YouView. These are simply data services with the IP address sent out as a MHEG data stream. Your tv/HD box will use the data to dial up the appropriate front page and start the download. The subscription bit will probably involve entering a passcode.

You will certainly need a Freeview HD box and this will have to be compatible with IPTV services and using their protocols.

The fact there is a "new block" starting at 110 is more coincidence than anything else. They are designated as text services, but due to launch time and the fact no other text services have launched in the meantime, they have ended up in a block starting at 110. I'm pretty sure this was unintentional.

They have nothing to do with YouView, they are standard MHEG channels which use the Interaction Channel and streaming video extensions to bring the channel down the broadband connection straight to your TV.

They are all operated by Connect TV/VisionIPTV.

I don't see many subscribing at £20 a month , the selling ethos of freeview & Freesat was free TV,

i don't either, but there is a niche that definitely will.

and may who have Freeview HD boxes won't even be able to access them either.

My 2010 Panasonic Freeview HD TV won't be upgraded in oder to view these channels.....

I Had it on Sky and had it for a while at the yearly Rate and when they increased the Price tag to £240 per year i told them where to shove it .
it is not a bad Channel as if you are interested in Horse Racing you get Free passes to Most Meetings and a Badge to get in to some of the Enclosures they did the Racecourse at Downpatrick but did not do the Down Royal at Lisburn a Couple of miles from where I lived
so that's where I lost interest in Them

When you see these launching now, without the need for YouView, it makes you wonder why the Beeb have wasted so much of our licence fees developing a service that only does the same?!!

But it's not much good if these channels can't be received by a significant number of freeview boxes or tv's,as per the poster above,plus the Technika box sold in Tesco,which is quite popular and has its own discussion thread on here,won't pick them up either.
