Texting While Driving

Is it illegal to text message when you drive if you are speaking the text message, instead of typing it?

I came across this phone app Vlingo (lets you text using your voice)looks pretty good, just didn't know if it was legal or not.

What is Vlingo?

The law in the UK basically doesn't allow you to touch the phone (or equivalent communications device - e.g. a tablet) in the process of making a call or sending other forms of communication (e.g. text message, email).

That means that you can still use a phone (or other device) using a headset or handsfree kit.

The Vlingo app looks like it still requires you to actually touch the device to use it, so I don't think that would be legal in the UK (or increasingly, elsewhere in the world).

Im sure i once read the rules stated that you cannot use a hand held phone whilst driving however it is acceptible if the phone is fixed to the car eg, in a cradle.

Vlingo is built in to the Galaxy SII I believe. I think there's a mode you can use (possibly even "driving mode") where it will constantly listen to for you to talk to it, saying something like "Hi Galaxy" in the samsung's case. No 'touching' needed. (in the OP's link there's a vid, which instead uses "Hey Vlingo" to do the same thing)

Of course, unless you're stuck in traffic, thinking about dictating texts rather than concentrating on the road is still a bad idea.

It's a good idea and works on the SGS2. However it can be frustrating if she doesn't understand you. I can't imagine using it in the car to send messages.
Too many idiots on the road (most using their phones) to be distracted by a phone.
